What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

Hi Haim!
Good morning now!
I'm sorry for the "JPC affaire" because you told me about that.
Of course and with no regrets this thing is nobody's fault and couldn't be differently.
So thanks again for you suggest.
The old and the incoming!
See you soon on here!
Cheers
Gianluigi
Gianluigi,
I hope that the JPC affaire is settled. Otherwise, you can tell them that they can expect a phone call from Berlusconi. I don't think he has been in his best mood since the elections, and I am sure JPC rather settle than risk hearing from him.
Best regards,
Haim

Today I went running for the first time this spring. Very windy conditions and a long day at work made the run very difficult. I needed some music in the car to energize me, and Moondog did the job.

Cool Corey.
The Briks have been tremendous with mah kinda music, too !

Oh yes!
I use a W5k a lot in here. And this is the first time I don't dread to put on a closed can.

Nice to have a turntable in your rig. Especially our kind of music. Can't beat the bass dynamics ( except a CD 555

I'm gonna put in a Lingo one of these days, damn it!

Attracted to this, Kuma, whats it like then?
David,
It's a piano leading jazz/fusion funk stuff from early 80's. ( I think? )
Bob James' recent work has been pretty lacklustre but his older ones like this I find still excellent.
Excellent studio musicians, too. But my hight light is the Steve Gadd's drumming on this record.

I still think the Moon Safari is better.. but what do you think of it?

Wild and magnificent.

An acoustic guitar duo.
Naim system excels at this type of music.
I'm not too wild on the world music, but the contemporary Spanish guitar is sometimes a nice change of pace.
This disc reminds me of Vincent Amigo.

Ramsey Lewis and company.
Sonny Emory who used to be in the E,W & F on drums. What a drummer!

I want You - Marvin Gaye
regarding air my list goes:
-Casanova 70 (12")
-Le Soleil est pres de moi (12")
-20.000 HZ
-Virgin Suicides
Walkie Talkie and Moon Safari are not so much my favorites (Moon Safari is more like a stripped down version of the first two 12"es).

bf.
Interesting.
20khz is not my favourite Air.
A Moon Safari is defintely more commercial. I always liked it from my first listen.
And still to this date, I like it everytime I play it.
A Talkie Walkie.. I need to play a bit more to see what develops.
I have to check out the Casanova 70.
Don't know that one.

kuma,
if you like "Air" then "Phoenix" (from France) could also be something for you. United and Alphabetical - both brilliant albums...
a new album is out and they will be on tour - live even better than the albums:

Gianluigi, you must try some Leonard Cohen. He really is great, songs from a room is good but there is also a Greatest Hits which is well worth a listen. Obviously you have to be prepared for the singer /songwriter genre, but I think well worth it.
Anyway, onto why I'm here. 3 purchases that arrived today:
currently The New Folk Sound of Terry Callier
will be Morph the Cat by Donald Fagan
after that Western Skies by Roddy Frame
Terry Callier is great. Stripped down sound, a man and his guitar plus the odd bit of bass and drums. Amazing voice which has only got better over the years when you compare this to the latest Massive Attack single.
Really looking forward to the Roddy Frame album, that's why I'm saving it till last
Approaching Morph the Cat with some trepidation considering the mixed response it has got on here.
Also have sneaking suspicion that the Terry Callier will be the find of the day !!
regards
Alan

Beethoven's 5th Carlos Kleiber and the VPO - familiar and fine.
First this one and then I'll try the same piece from the Karl Bohm (coincidently also with the VPO but 5 years earlier) boxed set of all 9 symphonies. I rarely go digging for it.
Both on well ripened vinyl of course.

Leonard Cohen is well worth trying (a truly unique artist). I think his best Album is probably still his first (The Songs of Leonard Cohen) though many of the others are fine (I'm fond of Ten New Songs, The Future, Live Songs and Various Positions) and, frankly, you can't go far wrong.
Ian - please post back how it compares (I've not heard any of Bohm's Beethoven). That said, that Kleiber is probably one of the great (arguably the greatest) Beethoven symphony recordings of all time.
