What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

Gianluigi,
I live in a culture where people around me tend to upgrade everything in their lives, from wives to houses to dentures, at least twice a year.
Not my cup of tea. I get attached to things and enjoy them for a long time. This is why I kept my LP 12 since 1978, my wife since 1983, my tractor since 1988 and so forth.
My 3.5 is only six years old and with a new transport I hope to enjoy it for a long time.
Regards,
Haim

Angela Hewitt's second volume of Bach keyboard concertos (containing nos 2-6, BWV 1053-1057). Interestingly she uses a harpsichord as continuo. I am most curious now to hear the first disc, which contains the 5th Brandenburg (as they have never sounded right to me on the piano). With the Australian Chamber Orchestra.

Yes.
I know what you mean.
Maybe one day we'll have a cup of coffee together.
Maybe it will never happen, but it's a very good wish i make to myself.

Ciao!

Tam,
I have a lot of Hewitt's Bachs. My favourite one is Klavier Book II. I did not like her keyboard concertos Vol 1 at all. I don't know if it is the tempo she is playing it with or perhaps I am just too used to Gould performing those concertos.

Haim

Dear Haim,
Thanks for that. This is my first Hewitt Bach disc. To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of Gould's playing.
I have heard similarly fine things about her Well Tempered elsewhere, though given I already have two piano sets, I'm not in a mad rush to pick up another. But I may at some point...

Kate Bush - Aerial. Disc Two.
I loathed it when I first heard it and it sat unplayed after that for some time but I'm glad I gave it another try. Perfect chilling out music. Great sound quality too, this is on CD, I know there were some doubts about the LP version.

Dear Tam,
I expected Miss Alsopp would be working with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchetra on that! Is it fine? I hope so.
Had a whole evening of Haydn symphonies 93, 94, 97, 101, 102 and 103, with breaks for some real grumbling on the Emigration thread!

Stefan,
Recently I felt like getting a Gismonti and I had a very hard time deciding which one to get. ZigZag? Danca Dos Escravos? Amazona? Academia De Dancas?
I finally went with Duas Vozes. Did I make a good choice? I have not received it yet.
I already have his Musica De Sobrevivencia and his In Montreal.
Best regards,
Haim

Dear Fredrik,
Sadly not (she has been wonderful when I've heard her with the Bournemouth), but the LPO play rather well.
In my view (and, mind, there are only two discs out so far) it ranks as the best digital cycle I've heard. The fillers are especially fine.
Out of interest whose Haydn? The Davis cycle arrived the other day (though I'm holding off as I only just got done with the Jochum - I wouldn't normally buy two such similar things so close together but bother turned up at around the same time for absurdly low prices).
regards, Tam

Fredrik and Tam
I'm an old fogey, I know, but I've never heard late Haydn symphonies played with more brio than in Beecham's '56/'57 RPO sessions on EMI.

Dear Tam, and Graham,
The forces I listened to were Concertgebeouw/ Davis, and RPO/ Beecham.
Both have their good points!
I want to investigate Jochum in this music as well.

Hey, wait a minute, kuma. Not at all do I find you have bad taste ! Very "streamlined" and consequent. That's why Tom Waits catches my attention in one of your threads. Our musical preferences must have diverged not TOO long ago. With much of the stuff you name I think "yeah, could have been the route I'd have been taken, too"...
Come on, play some Earth/Wind/Fire on me, will you ?

I suspect Beecham is next on my list, as regards Haydn. However, I think the next gaps I want to plug in my collection (especially in light of some of the discoveries I've made lately) are in the baroque period.
Currently listening to Miles Davis and Bitches Brew:

In Montreal is special (although technically not always on the "right side"...), because of that very special encounter with Haden. My favorites - probably are "Solo" and "Sol do meio dia"
