What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

Tchaikovsky Symph. nr 1 'Winter Dreams' LPO under Rostropovich. Nice with a late unhurried breakfast.
Can't find an amazon image for it since it is on nice old vinyl.

Gianluigi good morning.
How have you been? I used to listen a lot to Morimur, but for some reason I am not returning to it too often these days. How do you like it?
Regards,
Haim

Listened to this recording of Mahler's "Das Lied von der Erde", with Kathleen Ferrier. It's a Decca ffrr (full frequency range recording) and I have to turn volume up to 3 o'clock instead of the 12 o'clock for other records.

Escalay by Hamza el-Din. The greatest piece played on the oud. In his memory.

Mackerras conducts a specially assembled wind ensemble in original version of Handel's firework music - a wonderful surprise for those (like myself, until picking this up recently) who think they know the work.

Steely Dan - Royal Scam; needed some guitar
The Lemon Pipers - Green Tamnourine; Memory Lane trip on Mono Vinyl (1968). At the Roundhouse in Dagenham (69/70) they used to playthrough with you and no one could believe it was TLP. One of my favorite psychedelic tracks.
21st Century Schizoid Band - Pictures of a City (live in New York); Power & Beauty & Power. All Crimso fans would be impressed. As a precaution the NY Fire Brigade were outside as the band were on fire
Kokomo - Kokomo; Needed to calm down after 21STCSB, so Mel Collins a bit more relaxed on the track Angel. Fantastic vocal by Paddie McHugh. The band included Neil Hubbard on guitar, good british funk and soul.

Dear Haim!
Close to fine................like an old Indigo Girls' song!

My friend have this record and let me listen to it a few nights ago.
This morning i reached town and got it.
Very nice.
Very well recorded.
Very intimate and deep.
Not extreme but sweet at the right level to my ears.
Fine for a hot spring night with silence all around but crickets singing in the grass!
Even doggy is quite.
A very lucky evening!

Cheers

Not a celebrity, but a good piano player (and teacher): Ragna Schirmer.
cheers
Stefan
Stefan,
I listened to her on JPC and she sounded pretty good. How would you compare her playing to Havard Gimse playing Haydn's Sonata No 60 in C Major?
Regards,
Haim
I'm sorry, Haim, I have to duck down, because I don't know Gimse's recording.
cheers

Actually it was last night, I stayed in so poured myself a whiskey or two. Started with:
Credence Clearwater Revival, nice rough American rock of the 60s.
Fleetwood Mac, Future Games, and the British invasion had started
Jethro Tull, Auqualung, one of my juvenile thrills from oh so long ago
Peter Gabriel, Blue car in the rain in cover, I remember having a tough time liking it when I first bought it back in the late 70s. It took me a few sessions, quite a few.
Peter Gabriel, Blue man in terrorist mask on cover. Loved Shock the Monkey on MTV, hated the album for many years. but last night I really enjoyed it in progression of music, it being from the mid 80s.
Beatles, Let it Be...Naked, had to come down to earth after that last one or I'd have nightmares.

Wolf - what a great play list.
All great material, but CCR are one of all time favourites (ignoring Mardi Gras, of course) - Green River is my favourite CCR album, saw John Fogerty on the TV last week and he is still rocking - surely the most underrated guitarist in rock history.
