What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

Been travelling all day but Mackerras and the VPO made for good company on the ipod playing Janacek's Jenufa.
(can't wait to hear him give Macropulos Case at ENO tomorrow night).
regards, Tam

welly in the form of Frank Black and the Catholics" Eponymous album
Recorded live to 2 track in 3 days in March 1997. Raw tight rock n' roll as it should be, no 6 months to nail this one.
A Gem.

Frank Black has done several really good solo albums. Too bad he is not a little better supported by the record buying public.

Never a truer word spoken.
I think "Teenager of the Year" must be one of the most overlooked classics ever.
All his solo albums are good, some excellent.
Glad to see some other Frank Black fans on the forum.

Finishing off the night listening to the great Rory Gallagher.
Against the Grain
Some gems on here.
I Take what I want the Sam and Dave hit given a great treatment.
And the blues gem all round man
I ain't no Naim technician
I Ain't no Naim technician's son
But I'll recap your system until the real technician comes
I'm a handy man
along with some Rory originals like
Bought and Sold, Souped-Up Ford and the slow ain't too good.
It may be a sign of age but they really don't make them like this anymore.
Goodnight

Just finished listening to Johnny Cash's American III: Solitary Man. Expected it to be a bit on the sad side but it really sounded great with crystal clear vocals.

Symohonie Fantastique of Berlioz. Paris Orchestra under Monteux. Watch out all those HIP efforts. Monteux played under Colonne, and owned his score. Colonnne worked with Berlioz! There are a few surprises here, both as to tempo and the sheer lightness and articulation of the music. It very fast in places, but never feels rushed. The whole Franco-phone style of symphony orchestra playing has completely been completely transformed since 1930!
Sadly all Monteux's scores incuding Colonne's of this music (marked by Berlioz) were taken by the Germans when Paris was over-run. Monteux was able to make his way, but his music libraray was lost. Monteux himself expressed satisfaction with this old set, prefering it to his later remakes in every case...

PS: Pearl Gemm CD 9012 from EMI Pathe Marconi 78s.

Dear Matt,
I have the famous old Beecham set, and once had one done in Boston (I think) by Monteux, but this one takes some comparing.
And it has something of a link to Berlioz! After all Monteux naturally preserved Berlioz's pencilled additions, and worked them into his reading. Nothing finer could exist as a score to base one's self on!
In Vienna, at performances of Haydn's Creation [a recording exists of C Krauss playing it there in about 1940], they owned Haydn's original score and set of parts. These formed the basis of Robbins Landon's new edition. Such a shame that Monteux's Colonne/Berlioz score is lost. We shall have to make do with this old recording to find the closest link. It is superb!

Martha Tilston - Bimbling, not as strong as the album when she was recording as Mouse but a potential grower
Now, Lágrimas Negras - Bebo & Cigala, a fusion of Cuban and flamenco bringing a sense of warm, summer evenings to a cold, wet and miserable Whitsun weekend
