What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

Listened to 3 Peter Hammill records: Skin, In Camera(gave up on that one) and Patience. Patience ain't half bad.

Then David Sylvian "Brilliant Trees"(been a while had to check) . Definitely not as good as "Secrets of the Beehive".

Then The Clash and "Combat Rock". The cd was a bit ruined (from the music library). Good fun. I want more of this.

And John Cale, Hobosapiens. I , like, like.

Diccus - glad you like it - I doubt you'll be disappointed when it arrives. Her other album, Salt, is slightly jazzier and a little less mellow but still excellent IMHO.

You just missed her - I saw her in Edinburgh at the end of last year. She was excellent, a very unaffected natural performer.

I don't know why, but I need a Phil Lynott and the lads fix now and then.

Of course you know why, otherwise you'd just be spending your life looking for fool's gold.

Punch the Clock - Elvis Costello

Strangely enough this is the only record in my collection with Chet Baker - I must rectify that.

Wow 23 years since Shipbuilding and Pills and Soap, I must now sound like people talking about WW2 sounded like in the 60's when I talk about the late 70's and early 80's. Shitty time but has not been musically equalled in the UK since.

Not Elvis' best but a fine album none the less.

after a day filled with classic (Grimaud fest and some Hille Perl), now with:

Great duo music played on a well captured Bösendorfer and el/acc bass or cello.

Enjoy

Well ROTF, your enthusiasm is contagious, so I searched out the one Scott Engel I have in my collection.

I have this album about 13 years and it has been played on several occasions to be put back unloved in it's case only to come out a few years later. So about 6 listenings and at least now for the first time my system can handle the orchestration.

Is Scott one of these love or hate on first listen? I will give it another go tomorrow but this album still isn't grabbing me. I'm reminded of Sinatra and shown where Neil Hannon of The Divine Comedy got his inspiration.
These opinions are very much on the fly and open to change with a few listenings, but I will say interesting but not involving (for me)

If I don't really dig this album is there much point buying any of his others?

Hi John

The Drift is as far removed from Scott as Danniel O'Donnell is from Captain Beefheart (not including the album Danniel sings songs from Trout Mask Replica of course). Although it sounds different from Trout Mask Replica, I believe The Drift is as different from mainstream pop music as that work.

Gracenote classifies Scott's The Dift as Punk & Alternative.

I can't promise you'd like The Drift, but I can promise you'll have heard few albums like it.

Try some samples

Cossacks Are
Clara
Jesse

The samples focus on the easy listening parts of the The Drift, but will give you a flavour.

All the best, Rotf

PS - I don't think The Drift will remind you of Sinatra. I think Scott's albums get more interesting the older he gets.
