What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

Dexy's Midnight Runners - Too-Rye-Ay
It's supposed to be their masterpiece, may well be, I don't know, but it sounds like nice clean fun.

Just been enjoying Decca's Erich Kleiber set (part of their Original Masters series). Mostly Beethoven symphonies, and thoroughly enjoyable. A song for £6.

I was pleasantly surprised by the sample on last months cover disc. It's good to hear it lives up to the hype (although I can feel the strain on my wallet already!).

Re Erich K, you must mean £6 per disc, surely?
Let me know if you experience really bad "crackling" for a few seconds in the last movement of the (Beethoven) Ninth. I've had two copies and it's present on both.

Nope, £6 total for all 6 discs
(there's a reason for Britannia!)
I've only listened to the first 4 discs so far (including the Ninth, which I think is the worst in terms of sound quality). As far as the crackling you mention goes, there's certainly something funny going on in those last few seconds, though I'm not sure I'd describe it as crackling, more like the kind of juddering interference when a tape is stuck. Other than that, though the set has been excellent.

Tam

Bach, Well-Tempered Clavier Book 1, Barenboim. Strange, I have the Gould version which I don't much care for (unlike his excellent Goldbergs) so I only bought this because it was on sale, but am finding it wonderful. May have to buy Book 2 as well now!

Haydn - Paris Symphonies; Concentus Musicus Wien, Nikolaus Harnoncourt
Delightful, definitely worthy of the Gramophone plaudits. Will have to dig out vinyl Dorati / Davis versions to do a proper compare & contrast

Haydn: Seven Last Words (Kodaly, Naxos). Can anyone recommend a good string quartet recording? The Kodalys play well but the recording's shit.
