What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

Schumann symphonies 1 and 2, Boult and the LPO (thankyou Fredrik). Cracking stuff, can't understand why it's taken me quite so long to get round to playing these.

Dear Tam,

I have suddenly gone into a Romantic phase! Last night Brahms Requiem, Second Piano Concerto (Adrian Aeschbacker), and the Haydn Variations, and just listened to the Pathetique {all BPO under Furtwangler]. Next I'll be diggin' out the Wagner! Probably not really, but some Sibelius of a more difficult sort might fit my exploratory mood!

Interestingly Naxos have an absolutley splendid transfer of the rightly famous HMV recording of the Pathetic (BPO Novemebr 1938), which is an incredible bargain at about a fiver [£5GB].

In fact the round off is some Wagner: Prelude and Liebstod [Orchestral performance without singer] from much the same period, so perhaps that rare occurance - Wagner chez Fredrik - will happen after all.

Good night to you all from Fredrik

Dear Tam,

... me listening to Wagner..., and feeling okay!

Yes, and ... er..., no! You just make sure you play the Boult Brahms a bit sooner. It will stagger you!

[Big low bandwidth grin]!
