What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

Sviatoslav Richter playing Beethoven piano sonata op. 110 (1965), accompanied by an audience that is playfully coughing along... Almost like in Keith Jarretts "Radiance" !
And - thunder that is coming nearer and nearer... Might keep me from reaching to op. 111, too...
cheers

I have been quite poorly in a mild sort of way, and off work the last two days with a temperature. Not sure that it is quite gone, but I shall have to go in tomorrow. But it did allow for some real nice listening.
Yesterday saw the Four Brahms Symphonies in a row, and today has unearthed some rarities. Not the least of which has been Haydns' Variations in F Minor, Last Seven Words From The Cross, and Sonata in E Flat, No 62, all played by John McCabe. For these two big meditative works it is vital to have a quiet and spacious listen without any sense of what one might be doing next! The Sonata came as a wonderful release after the steady tension of the two big works. The piano seems to melt away, and is only a comunicator of ideas rather than an end itself in such music.
The complete set of Sonatas and Piano Music played by John McCabe is currently out on Decca at a very budget price...
Good night all, from Fredrik

It was the answer. Mind you we didn't know what the question was, and still don't.
