What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

"Celtic Voices: Women of Ireland"
Electric/folk compilation album. The usual culprits.
Daft script means it is impossible to read the track or artist details. Repeated inside in exactly the same daft script. The triumph of celtic flavour over intelligibility?
Not a bad album though. Some overlap with others of a similar genre.

Haydn: Seven Last Words (Kodaly, Naxos). Can anyone recommend a good string quartet recording? The Kodalys play well but the recording's shit.
Thanks,

I don't have it, but the Penguin guide (which I normally find fairly reliable) goes for the Lindsays recording. I've heard them do a bit of haydn live and that was very good. That said, they don't have too many complaints about your recording so.....

Is it very good? I've been tempted but it's rather a pricey set.

Seconded
Also Lindsay's version of "last words" is OK, but can't remember the name of the other Quartet I have doing this, but vinyl and most likely out of print, CBS Masterworks iirc

Bach's Concerto in D minor for two Violins, strings and continuo. Is there a more beaytiful concerto for violin, violins or even any instrument? Heart's ease if ever there was! Fredrik

Yes, it is a pity the outer movements are so short.

Dear pe zulu,
You will know the recording I was listening to! The return compliment will find the post tomorrow. I am terribly sorry that I made a terrible mess of the earlier efforts, and being tired and not well, meant it took till this weekend to finish the job!. I kept making mistakes with the settings and so on.
I like shortness, and so, though it might well be longer, it seems to me typical of old Bach that he so consentrates the music that it is wonderful in such a short space of time.
All the best from Fredrik

Dear Fredrik,
Thanks in advance, and do not apologise. I took my time too to find out to get the best results.
And I have not yet found the time to write in your thread Bach NOT on the pianoforte. Essentially I agree with you in everything, but I may be able to add arguments.
Kindest regards,
Pe-zulu

Beethoven, Hammerklavier: Brendel (live). Enough to make other pianists shut up shop!

Bartok No.2 for me please! Alban Berg's concerto also has a lot to offer.
I suppose the Brahms D major is probably the finest concerto ever written, however.
