What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

Blues Ballet is my favorite cut from this album.
I like many of the modern composers of soundtracks, especially Thomas Newman. This one is one of the best, IMHO

My version doesn't have the extra track though, which doesn't belong on this album in any case, it belongs on the next album.
This is my favourite Agent elpee and contains my favourite argent track - Russ Ballard's Where Are We Going Wrong

Writing on the Wall's Power of the Picts is one of those rare albums that is written about a lot if you ever get offered a mint copy of the original for £150 then say 'No Thanks', it realy isn't that great - thought I'd play it again to check I hadn't changed my mind and even the new DV cartridge/phono stage can't turn it round. Mine is a repressing that is worth next to nothing BTW.
Wimple Winch on the other hand are superb and anything by them is worth having - they used to be called the Four Just Men and then they were called the Just Four Men, but it was as Wimple Winch that they shone. Save My Soul is one of the greatest singles ever made IMHO.

and finally for this evening
I love The Breeders. It feels to me as if they just picked up instruments, said "Hey these sound good" and recorded some shambolic primordial rock n' roll. No finesse, no virtuosity, but an energy, a vitality, a sense of FUN.
It also contains one of the best singles of 1993 "Cannonball"

Good to see another JJ fan on here. Have loved him since since first hearing him on Whispering Bob Harris' Radio 1 show when "Naturally" was first released. Have been lucky enough to see him live 3 times.
That said, I am currently listening to Beethoven's 9th! Not sounding quite as awesome as it did earlier with the 555PS in the system, but still damed fine. It is staggering that a man with almost no hearing could conceive and execute such a work.

Handel's 12th. Concerto Grosso in B Minor (opus 6).
Adolf Busch Chamber Players. Available on Pearl Gemm. Not the least bit twee, just played from the heart, and to the heart, but phenominally stylishly as well. I love this rarely heard concerto, and this is my favourite performance of it.
