What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

Dear Haim,
That Wagner disc looks interesting - is it just orchestral chunks or is it something more?

1. JS Bach by Gidon Kremer on ECM ("The Sonatas and Partitas for Violin Solo" ecm new series 1926/27) and Hilary Hahn on Sony ("plays Bach" - partina 2. and 3. and sonata 3. sk 62793) - it is completly different thinking about playing Bach. But both Cds are beautiful.
2. Stefano Battaglia "Raccolto" (ecm 1933/34) - from poetry to free - very strange record but I like it.
3. Ornette Coleman "Chappaqua Suite" (sony records srcs 9192-3 - japan edition) - classic.

Just put on some Bach Organ Preludes and Fugues, including the last in C. This has a wonderful swaying Prelude, which leads to a startlingly cool opening to the Fugue, but there are the most wonderful contrapuntal fireworks in store. Every device, but so naturally employed that the innocent ear is simply taken by the splenour and build up of beauty and tension. Really in my First Eleven of the Music World Cup!

Me too. I like very much the first track, though in general I prefer disc II.
