What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

A little of the first book of Bach's Well Tempered, played by Walcha (his later DG recording - many thanks pe-zulu). In some ways I think I prefer it a little to the earlier account so far (but I don't really know either well enough to comment properly).
Now off to Radio 3 for the closing concert of the Aldeburgh festival (and in particular the Ades violin concerto from Ades and the CBSO, soloist Anthony Marwood - apparently the work was written for him).

And very wonderful it was too. Indeed, I'd venture to suggest it's the finest Ades piece I've heard yet (though I haven't heard all that much) - I hope it gets recorded soon.

First listen to this 5 cd set - I should have an opinion by early 2008!

Dear Ian,
That's a wonderful set (in particular, take a listen to the K.331, last 3 tracks of disc 3 in my set, in particular the way she plays the Turkish march finale is just stunning).

Tam,
Thanks, I'll look out for that.
I'm rather swamped in Sonatas at the moment since as well as the Mozart I'm trying to work my way through the Bach Solo Violin Sonatas and the Sonatas and Partitas, both pairs of discs from Grumiaux. They were cheap as chips on Amazon and on Fredriks Record list so too good to miss. And I think they are! I haven't digested even 20% of them yet but some of the violin playing is achingly beautiful. In this set, the way the harpsichord plays so quietly along in great. Sometimes I've heard such music live with the harpsichord being too dominant rather than taking a back seat.
Anyhow that I guess opens a whole other set of opinions!
Ian

I wish you a nice listening. Of course I shall be interested - and Frederik too I am sure - to hear your reactions, when you have listened to the set more thoroughly.
As to Mackerras´ Beethoven, my work has forced me to take a pause a few days, but I shall return soon.

10 new songs Leonard Cohen#4
It's funny how when the weight of anticipation is taken off an album that one can have quite a different opinion of it. This has just gone up in my estimation.

I've always enjoyed 10 New Songs. Dear Heather is the only album of his that I've ever felt fell flat at all.
Dear Ian - I know the feeling - I have absurdly many CDs on my 'to be listened to shelf'.
Dear pe-zulu - I will post my thoughts on it (on the Walcha thread at some point), though I suspect I will talk about the partitas and the French and English suites first (I still feel that the Well Tempered is such a vast and complicated work that I don't really understand it well enough yet to comment too much on readings, hence why I've said little about the EMI set).

Stefan,
It looks to me (all those MAs) like one of my posts. Anyway, I do not have The Invisible (got a little tired of Epstein's sax), how is it?

I like the overall sound experience, here: Nicely presented into the recording ambience, especially true for the drum set, this time. Musically, good for the backgorund, and not annoying if you read a book with it (which I did...)
cheers

"Jazz:live": by the Real Group, a Swedish vocal group with no instruments, singing an eclectic mix of jazz and pop material. I picked it up at Arlanda airport years ago and appreciate it more now than I did when I first got it. That old Naim magic at work again. I can follow each voice easily now and it al coalesces beautifully
