What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

Bach's first partita, played on the harpsichord by Helmut Walcha (wonderful stuff).
Earlier, the first act of Figaro, Parry conducting the Philharmonia (from Chandos's opera in English series). Lots of fun, full thoughts to follow on the opera in English thread when I've heard the rest.
regards, Tam

Bach Concerto in D Minor for Harpsichord and Strings. Ralph Kirkpatrick and the Lucerne Strings. Yes this is very good, and a new performance to me, having got readings with MJ Pires (Erato), Edwin Fischer (EMI 78 transfers), and Muray Perahia (Sony).
But the only other proper performance, or at least proer in the sense that is is played on the intended instruments, is a live concert recording I did in 1985 of a broadcast given by the HM Linde Consort at the QEH in London. That is in may ways the the best, but Kirkpatrick has other virtues like a splendidly clear, musically balanced recording, which lets me listen into the music, as almost with a score.
Tremedous...

I wish the Spanish team could have danced better with the ball yesterday against France.

alright, so here's what i picked up used on cd:
just finished. absolutely brilliant!
half way through this one, i think this one will need some time to grow on me. interesting, and even sometimes beautiful music, but unfourtanely the lyrics are kind of trite and full of cliches.

U2 Rattle and Hum#8
unusual album format, I quite like it as a studio album but think the live section a bit pointless

Gianluigi - I love this cd and other of Tsabropoulos (in tro Tsabropoulos/Andersen/Marshall "Achirana" and "The Triangle" and solo album "Akroasis"
today is ECM day, so:
1. "Sart" - Jan Garbarek/Bobo Stenson/Terje Rypdal/Arild Andersen/Jon Christensen - this cd was recorded in 1971 but it sound very fresh today. ecm1015
2. "Cycles" - David Darling with great Collin Walcott, Steve Kuhn, Jan Garbarek, Arild Andersen and Oscar Castro-Neves. Good stuff and beutiful record. ecm 1219
3. "Neighbourhood" - Manu Katche with Jan Garbarek, yaoun polish pianist Marcin Wasilewski, basist Slawomir Kurkiewicz, and well known Tomasz Stanko. One of the best Cd I bought in last year. ecm 1896
4. "Universal Syncopations" - Miroslav Vitous with Jan Garbarek, Chick Corea, John McLaughlin and Jack DeJohnette - Garbarek plays pure jazz (like he did with Jarret in the late 70's). Although all musicians on this record are stars, they play together and they are listening each other) great great cd. ecm 1863
