What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

Hi Parmennides!
Yes.
This is one of those records you look for ages and than find in hand suddenly and enjoy for many many years.
This forum is becoming more and more a source of emotions.
Thanks to the soul and love for music of the people here.

Cheers!

Dame Julia. Not her best, but still very good. A much under rated lady with a remarkable talent.

Roy Harper - Once#9

This is one I got in an Our Price sale about 10 years ago and didn't even give it the "once" of it's title.
I've listened twice tonight and enjoyed.

anyone know where this would stand in his pantheon?

Mozart early symphonies from Mackerras and Prague Chamber Orchestra. Earlier I listened to some of my new box of Walcha's mono Bach organ cycle (at £8 from an amazon seller, it would have been rude not to...), in the form of the first two trio sonatas. And, of course, the third in Paul Lewis's excellent series of Radio 3 Beethoven concerts (I urge people to tune in for tomorrow's if they haven't been listening already - this is wonderful Beethoven playing).

What about this?

Gian,

I do not have it. I was disappointed by Holland's quintet's Not For Nothing so I did not persue this group anymore.

On the other hand this is excellent:

In the car today. A great combination of sax with viola (kim Kashkashian) and drums (Manu Katche).

Micheal O'Suillebhain - Oilean#10

Whereas Hosrlips took Irish trad and rocked, Micheal took it and went classical. here in a mostly self penned symphony (or perhaps a concerto as his piano is the dominant instrument along with Matt Molloy's flute) with the Irish chamber Orchestra.

Certainly interesting and there are a few excellent numbers (movements) on it.

Thanks but I am not much into DVDs. I watched recently the dance films that incorporated Yo Yo Ma playing the Bach Suites but I still enjoy more strictly listening to the music.

Hi, Haim.

You're referring to the series Inspired By Bach for which Yo Yo Ma commissioned various artists in various mediums to create a film for each of the six suites.

If you only saw the film with the dancers, there's so much more to discover and you might change your mind about it. Other than that one, there's an inner city music garden, a kabuki performance, a virtual exploration of 18th century architecture, ice dancers, and, my favorite, a short narrative film by the brilliant film maker Atom Egoyan (whose other films should be investigated regardless). Each film illuminates the music in ways unimagined, an inspired counterpoint.

And Ma's performance is, to my ears, sublime and soulful.
