What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

Paul Lewis continues his Radio 3 Beethoven sonata cycle with a magically played op.79.

Totally agree, but I've got Joy Division Oven Gloves.

When the dish is too hot
You’ll never guess what
I’ve got Joy Division oven gloves

It was her desire
I put my fingers in the fire
Cos I’ve got Joy Division oven gloves

I’ve got Joy Division oven gloves

Ooh, ooh, tropical diseases
Ooh, ooh, chemical alarm
Ooh, ooh, I’m a little blasé

In me Joy Division oven gloves
In me Joy Division oven gloves

Inspired me to listen to

ROTF

Nice song lyrics mate, never heard it tho. I cant find any Joy Division oven gloves on ebay but i live in hope. My friend did tho get a nice Ramones Pinny recently.

I'm suprised your favourite band never wrote a song about the great....................

Hot summer night, open windows, soft lights and low volume.
Beautiful.

Gian,

I do not have it. I was disappointed by Holland's quintet's Not For Nothing so I did not persue this group anymore.

On the other hand this is excellent:

Best regards,

Can't agree more (on the Brahem CD), Haim.

Yes.
She's a fireball!

But from what I understand her style hasn't changed over time. I haven't heard her recent recordings.

OMG...

This reminds me immediately of the session I once had with the 5 CD set of take-outs from the "Amercian" series I ran through in one shot. And not only a few tears that I had shed, then. Only arrived at song three, here, and it gives me the shivers (as Owen Meany would say) like crazy.

Wow,
Stefan

Hi, Haim.

You're referring to the series Inspired By Bach for which Yo Yo Ma commissioned various artists in various mediums to create a film for each of the six suites.

If you only saw the film with the dancers, there's so much more to discover and you might change your mind about it. Other than that one, there's an inner city music garden, a kabuki performance, a virtual exploration of 18th century architecture, ice dancers, and, my favorite, a short narrative film by the brilliant film maker Atom Egoyan (whose other films should be investigated regardless). Each film illuminates the music in ways unimagined, an inspired counterpoint.

And Ma's performance is, to my ears, sublime and soulful.

Fred

Fred thanks.

I saw only the dancers film which I did not enjoy that much. I will try the others when I get a chance.
I borrowed recently from a friend your Short Story LP which I am enjoying a lot. In it was a twenty years old Critic's Choice by Neil Tasser about you and David Onderdonk performing at Rick's Cafe Americain, Holiday Inn on Lake Shore Drive. Your photo was taken by Jennifer Girard.
Let me know if you are interested in having it.

Haim

Stefan, welcome back.

I don't know what you are doing in the UK when all the games are being played on German soil. I watched today the Germany - Argentina game with a young Albanian lady who is a great soccer fan. She flew last week to Germany to see two games live and almost had a heart attack today during the penalty kicks, though it was a happy ending for her.

Guilty - Barbra Striesand - I consider this to be one of THE albums by Striesand.
Guilty Too - not over impressed by this album, over processed too run of the road and pop-ee and getting too close too sounding like another Bee Gee's album IMO.

Haim,
It was as bad as it could get: I was in the aircraft flying back, exactly during the match. When I arrived at the gate, I could only see the last three penalty shots. You can imagine that Frankfurt airport was a single "Woaaaah!" when Lehmann held the last Argentina shot...

Cough... Returning to something more serious Winker

Huw: Your recommendation of

is absolutely one of the ...of the year. Just reading through composers, selected pieces, musicians (also known w/o the context of the Harmonic Garden) hat watered my mouth, and the first listening probes are keeping that promise.

Thanks for recommending this. Needless to say that Haim has to place another JPC order, soon...

cheers

Boyce: Symphony called the Worcester Overture.

From my very last Concert. Well it is not half good! None of this letting HIP get in the way, but it actually is rather stylish, without too musch consideration of the learning!
