What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

The Birthday Party - Prayers on Fire. A wonderful record from 1981.

compared to the other three "On Broadway" versions, this is the most "approachable" - but I'm only at third song. Thank God they have tamed Masabumi Kikuchi's ranting (a bit) - unlike when he plays with "Tethered Moon".

Think I could like this one...

cheers

Both are great.

'Some people say that a musician is born with a very special sound in his mind and spends a lifetime trying to find that sound on his instrument'.

One AM in the morning, playing for the second time Rolf Lislevand's Nouve musiche.

Fits very well into my "discovery" of the AliaVox label and their fabulous catalog driven by Jordi Savall and Montserrat Figueras - what GEM's. Any suggestion what to get from them ?

cheers

Stefan,

Here are my AliaVoxs. I find the top four to be exceptional:

Elizabethan Consort Musiv, AV9804
Carlos V, AV9814
El Canta De La Sibil La, AV9806
Battaglie & Lamenti, AV9815
Biber, AV9825
Harmonie Universelle, AV9810

Jordi Savall was in Chicago last year and I missed him. That's how bad I am, Stefan. You will find also on some of the Alias Roy Lislevand and Montserrat Figueras playing & singing.

Regards,

Haim

Fantastic remastering "greatest hits" spanning 4 CD's in two volumes. Volume 1 possibly has the edge on volume 2.

This is not very colourful, but it is OK - it came highly recommended so I thought I'd give it a try.

Bidu Sayao / Opera Arias & Brazilian Folksongs / Sony

I was looking for the disc over a year and found it today among the AliaVoxs.

Playing now: Bachiana brasileria No. 5 by Hetor Villa-Lobos. Never heard that piece performed better.

Words of Love - Buddy Holly#18

This is the second cd I've come across that skips. I certainly hope 2:17 is not the ratio.

What was common about the 2 Cd's was that the label side had gone brownish, like old paper would.

Has this happened to anyone else.

I have seen machines to that can remove these "scratches" - anyone have any experience of them?

not all "blind purchases" go well... This one attracted me because of the combination of Haffner, Nils Landgren, Lars Danielsson. Too much "ambient" and elctronix, for my taste...

But maybe (HH), it'll be a grower ?

Geoff P, you might like this one !

Dixie Chicks - Taking the Long Way. Good + slightly less country than "Home" IMHO.
