What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

Had the chance to listen to it last evening.
Not the everyday record but an interesting work in my opinion.

You get a nice little book with the words so you can sing along.

I think it is a fantastic album.

Hi ROTF!
Yes.
One of the best things i've listened to lately.
I had not the chance to listen to the entire of it but my good friend will surely give it to me for a couple of days.
Don't know why but when the music started i suddenly went back to last Suicide's album.
Another great album!
Cheers!

'Blubber Plinth' - Masterpiece!!!

One of my favourite.
Have you tried the Power Crown yet?

Hi Kuma,

I have still yet to purchase 'Power Clown'.

However, it is very much on the 'to buy' list!

On a hot sultry evening such as this, you could do a lot worse than Dexter Gordon - One Flight Up. It works for me.

Rotf,

I'd be interested to hear what you think of it when you have given it a few more spins. I've got all the early singles i.e. the first half a dozen tracks listed, and the first LP, but I've never heard their later stuff. I cannot believe that Alphaville is not on this compilation.

Regards

Nic

Nic - the first tracks have the most drive and seem as if they just came naturally, as you move in to the album it becomes more sophisticated. The later tracks are clever with a strong comical element - the organ sounds like early Martha & the Muffins (which is no bad thing).

Bliss is strangely haunting track sounding a bit like Ray Davies

So you want to be my girlfriend
Wax my moustache in the morning
I'll curse you over breakfast
Where's my coffee; call this a boiled egg?
It's runny, or hard
Yes, it's hard

Killing Dave is another strange epic - a bit Velvet Underground.

Whereas Leather Jacket is a bit Doors like.

I can see the appeal and this is good collection of songs, but like so may groups the early stuff is the best.

ROFT,

Thanks for the review, good observations. Having seen the Monochrome Set live many moons ago, and owning all the early stuff, I suppose I have always been a bit worried about hearing some of their later output, that might not be as good. One does not like to have ones illusions shattered, but on this evidence I'm tempted to take the plunge. I always thought that they would complement your love of HMHB.

Currently

"Hit" Peter Gabriel again. I enjoyed it so much earlier I just had to listen again. Great songs, great lyrics, great performances and very good sound quality.

Jason!

It's one of their best!
You won't regret it. ( its liner note alone is worth something Big Grin )
Every tune is a gem. You won't be bored one bit front to back.

I've been looking one on a vinyl, but so far no luck. Frown

I haven't heard it, but I'm rather fond of 'The Very Big Carla Bley Band', 'Big Band Theory' is not bad either.

Note to self - must buy the second one.

Have you got to the KV 331 yet?

Tam,

yes - I jumped straight to it on your recommendation - really excellent. I had a couple of train trips this week and this gave me a chance to have a good long listen to a few of these discs on my MP3 player*. They have a real life to them, great playing and of course great new (to me) music. I'm really pleased with this set. And still one disc to go. Smile

Ian

* no flames about mp3 players please - an essential item for the traveller, a good tune is a good tune.
