What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

Sounds like I may need to delve into Furtwangler's Brahms. Surprised we haven't yet heard from Jochum (and if Graham is listening, he will no doubt be wondering where Celi has got to).

He has included Mackerras (so he does not make my list), but might perhaps have raved more about him [smiley]

regards, Tam

edit - spoke too soon, he's now playing Jochum's BPO issue (which I personally find superior to the later LPO issue).

Long forgotten (and in fact unlistenable on many systems - escpecially speakers...)

Full of spirit, this music, full of spirit...

Diccus, pretty good. I heard him on South by Southwest and I'm not quite sure why it has not happened for him. Every album is better than the last one.
Possibly the music is a little "old-fashioned". Sir Jimmy Young described his voice as “a cross between Andy Williams and Percy Sledge” and the old Roy Orbison similarities are there as well. As long as you know you are buying ballads not heavy metal I'd buy it. £7.00 from Amazon.

Various - pure celtic chillout a double of a quite wide range of celtic music including Altan,Fergal Sharkey, Sinead O'Connor,Don Carmel Band and many others. A good cross section of the more commercial stuff about.

Muse - Black Holes and Revelations

Grandiose, overblown, songs about 'supermassive black hole', 'city of delusion' and 'knights of cydonia'.

Prog is well and truly safe in the hands of the boys from Devon!

Brahms - Academic and Tragic overtures from Boult & the LPO. Fine stuff (I don't think that the Academic quite matches Jochum with the same orchestra, but the Tragic is really wonderful).
