What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

hey, no need to justify. JL has done some VERY nice things. Just don't try to "compare" it with a too academical eye, and a lot of fun will origin from his recordings...

cheers

Exellent choice, ROTF!

I've just discovered that the 60's are more than Beatles and Stones!

Today I've been listening to Kinks, Byrds, Small Faces and Who...Brilliant!

Later in the evening: Davendra Banhart (Brillliant, too!)

Regards
Fredrik

Thanks Fredrik

I am still stunned by the news that Syd Barrett has died - he was my 60s hero - perhaps because he recorded so little compared with the other artists of the time.

Although each decade has its great moments, the 60s had lots. I love the music of the Kinks, just as much as I love the music of the Beatles.

The Small Faces (Ogden's Nit Gone Flake), the Pretty Things (SF Sorrow), Incredible String Band (5000 Spirits), Rainbow Ffolly (Sallies Fforth). Vashti Bunyan (Just Another Diamond Day), Hollies (Butterfly), Zombies (Oddesey & Oracle) are among my favourite albums of the time. There were a whole host of superb singles too (I have Rubble volumes 1-20 in which Bram Cruso collects together some of the best).

Ray Davies is also a great songwriter - every track on the two albums I played earlier in the day are well crafted songs. Village Green and Arthur are also worth seeking out.

The Who Sell Out is my favourite Who album, though I really like Who's Next too.

However, I'm not familiar with Davendra Banhart - I'm afraid. Is he someone I should listen to?

Best regards, Rotf

Hello ROTF,

Oh yes, SF Sorrow and Parachute, too, are great recordings...Incredible String Band, too!

Never heard about Zombies, Ffolly or Bunyan.

Davendra Banhart is a relative new american artist. Reminds me of earlier Incredible String Band and Nick Drake. Great new music!

Take a listen!

Dear Stefan,

I agree entirely, and I think it will not be my last of his CDs - the only question is should I shelve it with classical or jazz?

What a great play list - particulary like the Thunderclap Newman album (well actually I like all your choices), must have a listen to my copy of Hollywood Dream.

Giulini conducting the Verdi Requiem - fans of the work should rush out and buy this DVD now - wonderful stuff. Not only, I think, the finest reading I own, but they way Giulini's love for the piece comes across is really special. I picked my copy up for under £10 here. I'll post some fuller thoughts after another listen.

Hey ROTF,

Thunderclap Newman:

"Something in the air/Wilhelmina" - what a great single!

I've just bought this album (their only one) and it's a masterpiece! Great music and lyrics!
