What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

After a lovely day with JN visiting, I am going to settle down to Mozart's Serenade, "The Gran Partita." This is often eroneously known as the serenade for thirteen wind instruments, but not yet has a conta-bassoon managed the feat of a pizziacato! The bass instrument can be a conta of course, and it works well, but the double-bass was intended by Mozart, and brings something special. I shall be listening to a wind only version for all that!

Pink Floyd - The Piper at the Gates of Dawn. It's been too long since I heard this. Wonderful stuff.

George Thorogood & The Destroyers - a great way to kick start a Friday morning free from the shackles of the office!
Can't believe how long I have had this

Candi Staton - His Hands, a gorgeous slab of vinyl - a little bit country, a little bit gospel & a little bit soul. Go buy!

Linda Thompson - Fashionably Late, diametrically opposite to Candi Staton but another grande dame of music at the peak of her game. Just wish she could be a little more productive. The 180g vinyl pressing is exemplary and, no pun intended given the label, rounder than the CD. The siren call of the CDS3 seems to be reaching irresistibility.

Elgar and Walton Cello Concertos: Daniel Muller-Schott with the Oslo Philarmonic under Andre Previn on the Orfeo label.
Was recommended in the Sunday Times a few weeks back so I thought I'd give it a go. Lovely.

I think Doug Macleod is great. I have "Come to Find" and "Can't Take My Blues" both on the JVC XRCD label. Wonderful stuff. The latter was the first disk I played when my 555PS was installed. Sounded amazing.
Currently listening to "Anthology" Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

Chris,
I don't have them on XRCD but given my experience with Terry Evans I am sure they must be great.

I bought a bunch on a business trip to Palo Alto in the mid90s. Mighty Sam Mclain, Jimmy Rogers, Terry Evans "Puttin' it down" and several jazz titles, including some Bill Evans. All great sounding and excellent music too.
In the very early days of CD I would buy discs which were highly rated in CD Review (a US publication) for Sound Quality, regardless of genre. Then I realised that music that I didn't like, however well recorded etc, was still music I didn't like! Now I get caught up in the remaster/rerelease excitement and guess what, the music is music I like whether it's been HDCD encoded or whatever!

Chris - yup, it's why I still listen on my iPod knowing that it never sounds quite like the main system but I still have my tunes.
Now listening to The Indestructible Beat of Soweto, vol. 1
Progressed onto "Beyond the Frontline," really jumping about the collection today. No idea what follows this.
