What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

Just finished watching & listening to The Dears on
KCRW; "Morning Becomes Eclectic" show hosted by Nic Harcourt from Monday, November 28, 2004. This was just after the release of the excellent No Cities Left. I only picked up the CD a few months ago and seeing this studio performance ensures I will see them live. Previews of tracks from the new album Gang of Losers can be heard here.

Haim, thanks for posting that, I want to buy it but haven't gotten around to it. I heard her twice in LA once as a loloist in a Mahler symphony and once doing her husband's song cycle Naruda. She has one of those relaxed natural warm voices.

Wolf,
I never had a chance to see Lorraine Lieberson live. I first heard her on the radio and then bought her music which I enjoy a lot.

Haim

"Try!" John Maher Trio, again a recommendation here. Great trio blues recorded live. An amazing guitarist with two fine sidemen in Pino Palladino on bass and Steve Jordan on drums. This thread stops me stagnating with old favourites. Thanks to all who contribute reminding me of the immense diversity available.

Dear Haim,
Thanks for posting this (I have now added it to my list of CDs to pick up - I've actually been curious since I first saw it, I'm a big fan of Fleisher from his Brahms concertos, I just hadn't go around to it).
regards, Tam

Cammell Laird Social Club by HMHB - superb: it sounds better ever time I listen to it, certainly in my top 10 greatest albums and only my tenth favourite Half Man, Half Biscuit album.
Cammell Laird have existed in the Wirral for over 175 years, and have been one of the area's main employers over that time. The company was founded in 1824 as a boiler and ironworks in Birkenhead. At the beginning of the last century the company merged with Sheffield firm Charles Cammell to create the now-famous name.
