What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

Rickie Lee Jones "Traffic from Paradise". There's a huge amount of low-level detail bubbling away on this disc, great fun to listen to. Leo Kottke produced this album and plays on it too.

Was Mouse Tales by Mouse, is Bryn Terfel's latest - "Simple Gifts." The former is delightful and has given constant pleasure - it surprises me how unknown they are. Terfel's latest is a bit patchy - think he should quit these populist discs and get back to the traditional repertoire, although his back doesn't seem to be up to operatic performance these days (2 attempts at seeing him as Falstaff all for nought as cancelled due to back problems

Couldn't agree more. That said, he has always been one for canceling at the last minute (I've lost count of the number of times he's pulled out of something in the Edinburgh festival at the last minute). Of course, he recently dropped out of the Royal Opera ring (and missed the performance of Walkure that I went to

Tam - having seen him in several Leiderabend, I can assure you it is worth the hassle.
Would love to see him in the Dutchman, mind you have no idea of an appropriate Senta to match Bryn's enormous voice.

Good point. WNO have Annalena Persson singing the role. I don't think I know here.

Bryn Terfel Jones (to give him his full name - I met him on a BA flight to Chicago once) is Welsh. Therefore feckless.
Make of that what you will, chaps.
And sheep should be afraid.

Indeed. He took his stage name because there was already a Bryn Jones and you know what odd rules these artists have.

Just finished Mahler Symphony no. 1, Bernstein and the VPO on DVD. Very good indeed. The camera was not nearly as annoying as a first glance had suggested it would be.

I had a boring day at home yesterday recovering from breaking my arm. One Adavan later I decided to sit and listen to music, all vinyl. Started with 2 early Elton albums, then Cat Stevens Teaser and the Firecat, Steely Dan 2 early albums, Stones Exile on Main Street and Sticky fingers, U2 Joshua Tree and Unforgettable Fire, Jackson Brown Pretender, Paul Simon Still Crazy (not his best but still very peronal).
Guess I was just in that 70's kinda mood. Don't have much in the way of current stuff anywy. Sure was a good night for tube amps on great guitars with accomplished players.

The Night Watch, King Crimson; their famous outing at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam on 11/23/73, which yielded "Fracture", "Starless and Bible Black", "Trio" and others for the (nominally) studio recording Starless and Bible Black.
I'm always amazed how mid-'70s Crim still speaks to me.

Bach, Mass in B Minor on a recent Naxos recording of the Cologne Chamber Orchestra and Dresden Chamber Choir. Not bad at all.

Music for piano, piano & Violin, piano & cello, that sounds so much more delicate, warm and relaxed after I installed last week a dedicated circuit for the music system.

The Dreams of Michelangelo by The 23rd Turn Off, so called because Liverpool is the 23rd turn off from the M6, this Jimmy Campbell led Merseybeat group was also known as The Kirkbys. The track Michelangelo is wonderful and the rest is interesting to any 60s pop-psych completist. Jimmy Cambell was later in Rocking Horse, who are worth checking out.
