What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

Stefan Yavrum,

Unfortunately, I have been geeting my tears lately from reading and watching the news in my old neighborhood.

I need some gentle uplifting music. Any Suggestions? (No Polka, please).

Regards,

Haim

Mauro Refosco / Sete Ondas / MA Recordings

Four Brasilians and four Americans meet in a church in Chelsea, NYC to play their music from the north and the south.

Just what I need.

Absolutely, as for me is Hejira, posted later.

The hissing of Summer lawn's is also quite apt in England at the moment.

Not Sure Diccus - sometimes I love it, other times he gets on my nerves. Reviews gave it around 3 out of 5 which I guess is fair, though tracks like Landed, Jesusland and Late show he certainly knows how to write a tune.

Rolling Stone - 3.5 stars out of 5 - "[H]eartfelt, elaborately crafted....Folds never loses track of his pop hooks, even when he's deploying tricky time signatures and Steely Dan-worthy chord progressions."

Uncut - 3 stars out of 5 - "[T]hese songs' lush reimagining with a trio only puts their emotional alienation in starker relief."

£6.97 at Amazon currenly, at that price probably worth a punt!

Steve,

god i think we share a fair amount of record/cd collection, i've got a few Alison krauss and Gillian Welsh (tho neither of those posted) and have seen both of them. Gillian Welch was class.

I remember some of the records I bought. one particularly My bloody Valentile album I bought in a record shop in Brighton smells of Pacholie Oil (still 15 years on) and whenever i smell it it takes me right back to that shop. Its easier to recall where i bought my recent stuff as its all mail order. Not quite as evocative either (Play.com, Amazon and thats about it!)

Take care

Zoltan Kodaly - Sonata for solo cello op.8 and duo for violin & cello op.7 - Xavier Phillips and Jean-Marc Phillips-Varjabédian. Initial thoughts are that whilst this is good it will have to go some to knock Janos Starker from top spot and Maria Kliegel from runner up

Moved on to the Blue Note sessions by Nigel Kennedy and his super collection of accompanists. Swings along nicely, perfect for a summer's evening.
