What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

Is everyone else watching the telly tonight ??
Anyhow I'm onto Beethoven's 5th C. Kleiber's famous recording. It bounces me along every time and gets me smiling.

Dear Ian,
Great disc (though I'm also rather fond of the driving energy Solti brings - and Davis is special too).
The Bohm Mozart arrived today so I shall be giving that a spin shortly (currently giving Karajan in Beethoven's first another go - early 60s recording with the BPO).
regards, Tam

Years ago this sounded great - now I'm not sure. It's not bad, at times it is rather good, sometimes verg good indeed, OK - an excellent blast from the past. Grinderswitch's Macon Tracks
Especially this track

Indirect NAIM sound.
Sitting in the dark on the screened porched. Kurtag's music is coming through an open window, getting a good mix with the crickets and frogs in the back yard.
I am alone for the night but I don't care. The music is good and the dog is strtched next to my feet.
Gian, I hope you weathered the storm and came out in one piece. My wife has a spare hair dryer, so let me know if you need one.
Good night,
Haim

Arguably the finest version of any Honegger works ever put on record.

Daphnis and Cloe [Debussy]: BBC Prom with the Philharmonia under Boutl! Concert recording from the mid-sixties, where everything makes me wish I had been there and old enough to appreciate it.
It would have been unforgetable - for sure.
It seems to me that Boult's contribution to English music performance was tremendous, but served to undermine the possibility of the gramophone recording industry and music critics placing enough importance on the fact that he was one of the greatest musician conductors of the Twentieth Century. [I still struggle to spell century - Sorry Adam! It has become e nervous tick for me, just like the bend by the Bank House Golf Club, where I put a car through the hedge once and always still take the bend too slowly now... Daily it has to be said...].

I played that once, and almost likeld it after some difficult rehearsals. On the same programmme was the Nobelissima Visione of Hindemith, which I adored.

Mozart:Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No.23 in A Major.
Inspired from an eailer thread.
Somtimes I have a hard time deciding what to listen to, another advantage of subscribing to this forum.
Cheers,

Dear Kuma,
Daphnis, on two continents! Great minds think alike, so where does that leave us? - You, a great mind and me a simpleton? Don't overlook Monteaux, also on Decca, as something very special in this music...
Boult and Furtwangler offer equal insights, but I would think that the complete music with choir, under Monteaux is indeed special.
Dutroit is an artist I am fairly sure I have not yet encountereed. But then I am out of date
Fred
PS: for all that I was impossibly tired this [yesterday] morning - the zzzzds have not claimed me, yet. Perhaps this will be my early end. Unable to sleep when I should, I can succomb to a final sleep...

Fredrik,
Indeed what a coincident!
Detoit's performance was one of the most exhilarating live concert I have attended.
I was glued to the seat for the duration.
The orchestra was definately *on* that nite.
I didn't know any of his background. It was a nice surprise since normally I thought that French performers/conductors are too reserved and refined for my taste.

I assume that's my fault then - since I won't shut up about that recording. Buy it now, people. [smiley]
Seriously though, with Giulini and the orchestra of La Scala it really is quite something. You'd never know Horowitz was in his 80s at the time.

p.s. Currently listening to CD Review on Radio 3 - I recommend forum members tune in at around 10 to catch a little of Mozart's arrangement of the Messiah

A few of the many played so far today
Cannot get enough of this and looking forward to seeing him in November
Atmospheric electronic jazz from Australia
Superb guitar trio
A really beautiful CD on ACT recorded outside at Salzau at 5am in the morning. You can hear the birds singing away.

I'm sure you've said before, but which ones are you going to.
I'd also thoroughly recommend Donald Runnicles two concerts.

Are those seat numbers in the grand circle or are you elsewhere?
Actuall - Z will have to be in the stalls, and way back under the overhang so you may get slightly poor sound back there.

both stalls - it was the best I could do when booking a single ticket online. How is the sound upstairs - I've always been downstairs?
