What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

Thanks Huwe,

I have been listening to this disc on a weekly basis, since I received it with my lost shipment of JPC.

Dear Stefan,

Who are the orchestra/conductor/tenor on that first Das Lied - I was only aware of the second (something I think no Ferrier or Mahler fan should be without).

Dear Haim,

I know you don't listen to much with big orchestras, but have you heard her Kindertotenlieder with Walter and the VPO?

Which "Lied von der Erde" recording are you referring to, Huw ?

1952 recording with Julius Patzak with the VPO under Bruno Walter - I have the original Decca and then later Ace of Clubs (Decca budget LP, 1968) LPs. I also have as a Decca CD.

The Naxos version appears to be with the NYPO and Svanholm as tenor. I think I would prefer to stay with the Decca set.

Thanks, Tam, for your VERY useful Uchida post. I know, what to get, now !

Both Ferrier CDs contain teh same material (the Bruno Walter recordings). My question was more about the mastering, if there were any differences. I've ordered the second one, and the Bach / Händel ariae, as well as Uchida's late Beethoven sonatas, the Mozart box and the sonatas for piano and violin.

Again: Thanks, Huw, Haim and Tam !

Meanwhile:

cheers
Stefan

Tilt - Scott Walker

You can get this album for less than £6 from Amazon. I only discovered it recently, but it is an amazing record. Scott surpassed it 11 years later with The Drift, but Tilt is surely one of the best records of the 90s.

Dear Stefan,

You're welcome.

As to mastering - I tend to have a preference for the issue from the label rather than the naxos (et al) ones that come from vinyl copies. This is because most of the time they had the original source to work with and therefore ought to be able to produce a better product.

That said, in cases where that isn't available, the naxos ones seem pretty good to me.

Bruckner 6 from Jochum and the Dresdeners. I can't wait to hear Runnicles and the BBC Scottish do this in just a few weeks time (Saturday the 26th of August - and if you're in Edinburgh, well worth checking).

Also, can't recommend this Jochum cycle enough (and now available very cheaply).

Sax and Piano: Always a nice combination. Here, played in front of a small audience. A tad too cool, but worth listening...

Mitsuko Uchida playing Schubert's moments musicaux D780 prompted by earlier discussion in an effort to ease my bad mood - lovely though it is, it isn't working. Suggestions appreciated.
