What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

Hmm, there seems to be a reasonable number of Yes fans among Forum members. And probably an equal number of Yes haters. Rick Wakeman was in Australia in September, doing a cut down show with his old collaborator Ashley Holt. His grand opening number was to play scales over a tape of Pachabel's Canon, over and over and over and . . . . zzzzzzzzzzz. It was almost painful to listen to. The inventiveness is totally gone.

B Minor Mass. Again! Twice in twelve hours, oh well...
Needless to say I enjoyed it 100 per cent today, but last night I was not quite on good enough form. I must dig out old Leonhardt's reading now. Maybe tomorrow afternoon, instead of a film!

Hello everyone! My first post to the music room, but I wanted to share a bit of a "discovery" with you guys:
I had The Verve's "Urban Hymns" for years, but never cared for it much. And if I did occasionally listen to it, it was mostly in the car. This afternoon however I listened to it for the first time in a very long time, and for the first time on my recently upgraded Naim system. I was astonished!! It's a great album and I am sure they would be great to see live!
Mark
P.S. I see a lot of you like the B Minor Mass, as do I. Of the ones I heard, my favourite recording of this masterpiece is with Philippe Herreweghe and the Collegium Vocale.

Every Saturday I put some music on and clean the house. Today I had Milcho Leviev play Bulgarian Piano Blues (recorded in Japan in 1989) and I had to stop working and sit in front of the ProAcs for a while.
Excellent music, but it really slows down the cleaning process.

Chopin Scherzi - Yundi Li
followed by
Schubert Piano Sonata D.959 - Murray Perahia
Does anyone have any recommendations for another interpretation of the schubert late piano sonatas? I also have the BBC live recording with Alfred Brendel.

Wilhelm Kempff's cycle on DG is outstanding. Mitsuko Uchida's recent effort is a little disappointing. Horowitz has good recording of the D960 (you would never believe he was about 80 at the time).

Mark, re Schubert sonatas - I always liked Clifford Curzon, wonderful old Decca LPs. My Mum favours Brendel for the later works (perhaps she knows best, she's the piano player in the family).

Cliffird Curzon was a Great Artist, and would prevent the release of anything he was not happy with... Actually has not happy with much, but his Schubert is a glory.

Forgot about Curzon. What little I've heard of his Schubert is very good.
