What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

Tell us more.
Ok heres some blurb from a website:
"Scuta wrote lots of songs and started recording them in his bedroom studio. He met lots of people who came and went from his various false starts and then remembered his old friend Dave Billing. They got together, chose some songs and the name The Dallas Guild, did some more writing and made the Registration EP so Scuta put a few copies in small record shops across London. But as he's no salesman he forgot to see if they got sold or not! He then met Chopper, all playing but no-dancing marvel. Whilst they were recording more songs and getting their first album together, Scuta got a phone call from a man he met in a Soho pub who wanted to put Men In White Coats on a car advert. A few months of not much happening and forgetting about it was interrupted by another phone call saying that it was going ahead with a car called the VW EOS. So there it is - on the telly! They are finishing the album this summer and there will be news + info about live dates and other things soon."
Cant wait for the album!

Try the K331 (especially the delicacy of her playing in the finale), the last work on disc 3 (at least on my set) wonderful, wonderful stuff.

The Beatles - Revolver, as SWMBO just informed me that it was released 40 years ago next Saturday. Lawks!

Today, I have been on a clean sandy beach on the Cote D'Azur for the 4th straight day of gorgeous sunshine, light breeze and blue skies having spent last week in Chamonix which was equally terrific in its own way and every single thing I've listened too just sounds great...c'est l'environment right?
Particular mention for the Lily Allen album which was frankly made for the beach and HDD player combo.

Thanks Tam,
I started with the first disc (K279-K283) and my very first impressions are a great apreciation of her finger work, timing and dynamic range. Also, she manages to both express some of the creation time's air and add a contemporary aspect, at the same time. Very content with the results of my quest, so far.
Will cheat and move on to the K331, next
cheers
Stefan

quote:Sadly I have not heard the Beecham so cannot compare - however he will be next if I buy another set. Personally, the Jochum would be the set I would be hardest pushed to part with, but Davis is very special too (see my Haydn london symphonies thread for fuller comments).
The Jochum set is very tempting as I guess he has the approach that is most different from Beecham, and I would like to hear an alternative reading.
Now I have just listened to Giulini's "Brahms symphony 4 + tragic overture" with VPO, and I think I prefer Boult on EMI and Jansons with OPO so far in this symphony. I probably also will need to listen to Kleiber again. Giulini's approach seems a bit thick here in the end of his career, and I preferred his brisker recording with the NYPO in Brahms 1.

Change of mood here with Gleda - Bollani, Bodilsen & Lund. One of the best discs of last year, fabulous piano trio.

It just keeps getting better with each listen. This is one that if I'm having a probelm deciding on what to listen to it works everytime. A Masterpiece.

Huwe,
I just bought it this week for the fourth time. It is the best present (beside my company, of course) that I can bring when I am invited to dinner.
Best regards,
Haim

Dear Haim,
I know you don't listen to much with big orchestras, but have you heard her Kindertotenlieder with Walter and the VPO?
regards, Tam
Dear Tam,
I am sorry, but no. You know me better. Every time I hear a large ensemble I get the urge to call the CCP (Crowd Control Police).
Last time I listened to an orchestra, I think it was the Chicago Symphony with Richter doing the second piano concerto of Brahms.
Best regards,
haim

Dear Haim,
Why the identity change?
regards, Tam
p.s. Give the Ferrier Kindertotenlieder a try - it's only £5 on naxos historical - though I suspect it may not be available in teh states.

hi'
Just spun on vinyl - David Gilmor : On an island.
Not bad... Great after a hard days...
It's rega p3 vs cd5i at the moment, they are both battling it out between them, cd5i easy has the edge, but the baby rega keeps pulling out some sly moves

Dear Tam,
I decided to start a new chapter in my life. I dyed my hair, got a nose job and decided to start over with the forum...
Seriously, I was having terrible time trying to post here in the last three days and finally I gave up and re-registered for the Groupee.
I feel so much younger now with the 'New Member' title and looking forward to the long way to reaching the 'Senior' status.
I will give Kindertotenliedre a chance. It deserves one just for its name.
Regards,
Haim
