What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

He,he, I prefer chamber music too, but some orchestral music is so good, that you have to hear it.

Last time I listened to an orchestra, I think it was the Chicago Symphony with Richter doing the second piano concerto of Brahms.

Not the worst recording of a great piece of music.

Tonight, I have been listening to Norway's Motorpsycho; which plays something like psychedelic, experimental, alternative progrock. I like it, but some of their earlier albums are still my favourites. They're difficult to describe, but in a way related to Sonic Youth.

Now I have started listening to something completely different, and one of my my best finds the last months. H-M Linde's (Linde Consort) with the Brandenburg Concerts and the Musical Offering by Bach. I thought I would not find this CD in years, but some days ago a used copy popped up at amazon.co.uk. It didn't show the cover and that it was by Linde (just "Brandenburg Concerts/Musical Offering"), but one at www.good-music-guide.com/forum claimed it was it, so I snapped it fast (sadly in front of another one at the forum). This sounds really promising Smile.

You are a very lucky guy. This is my and Fredrik´s absolutely preferred version of the Brandenburgs. And I know indeed a lot of versions.

Now I just wonder how Beecham compare to e.g. Colin Davis and Jochum in the London symphonies, as Beecham is the only one I have heard so far. Any thoughts from someone?

Dear Rubio,

Before Davis and Jochum made records the old Beecham set was the first really fine traversal of the music for the gramophone.

Davis is often slightly better played, and certainly more smoothly recdorded (better? not sure), but the Beecham set is essential even now, for the great conductor's lightness of touch, and insight in to subtle detail. Not everything is perfect by today's standard, but it it is a unique view that comes right to the heart of the music.

My set does not skip as you suggest. Get it exchanged, in my view.

Happy listening from Fredrik

PS: The other six London Symphonies are also to be had on a two disc set as well...

Wow, the Greenleaf label is a treasure chest. Couldn't resist, and placed an order with 3 CD's (2 Douglas, 1 Von Freeman) with them.

Thanks for that - are you in the Credit Card business, by chance ?

cheers

Yes I am!

I have just played Dave Douglas Meaning and Mystery for a second time today on a horrible wet Sydney night drive home from the city.

It is very good indeed. I am about to play this new one now which is the band I saw live once at the Village Vanguard. It's a two disc set - set one is on, set two is stuck in the CD drive of the PC for some reason not wanting to come out, Hmmm.

Anyway the CD is Dave Douglas Quintet Live at the Bimhuis 24/10/02 on the Greenleaf Paperback Series.
