What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

Thanks Steve.

This afternoon is our annual summer picnic at work. Hopefully the obnoxious jerks lay off the drink until the normal folks have at least had a chance to eat. On the bright side I can sneak away and enjoy the rest of the afternoon apart from my coworkers. A taste of autumn today in Central New York. 70F and not a cloud in the sky. A lot better than last week's 98 degrees and tropical humidity.

Regards

Sounds good to me. I'd be on the way if I could only get out of the UK! Instead I'll put a few tracks of this on - enjoy!

Neil Young - American Stars and Bars

Bishopla, i saw your post about this album the other day and bought it after realising it has like a hurricane on it. It is a fantastic album and i intend to seek out some more.

My album of the year......2004 and finally its getting the exposure it deserves. Played it through my newly arrived Flatcap2x with a couple of new black SNAICS and my CD5/160/72/epos 12.2's. Flatcap and SNAICs have given system a real lift. Noticed the percussion on this album is superb

Woo hoo!!

Turn it up for the entire disc!

Now... if I can only get a hold of a vinyl copy on this.. gotta be a hoot on the LP12. Smile

p.s. I am gonna try to get a hold of Faze Action 'plans and designs'.
p.p.s. How do you like the liner notes cartoon? Big Grin

Love the sleeve notes!

I have to say that although they have released a ridiculous amount of albums, they do not repeat themnselves at all. Every one an original. I havent even got a favourite because they all sound different.

I hope you wont be disappointed with Faze Action. A very kind of '70's' feel to it with some superb string arrangements. Now that will be a hoot on the LP12!

Anyways, first up this evening:

On a record! Big Grin
Scored this today!

Jason,

I am glad you are enjoying the Power Clown.
The whole album back to back keeps my interest going. It's almost like a story telling.

Unfortunately, I ran out of time to go to a CD store!
Next week. I will get the Faze Action. ( would be cool if I could find it on a record )

Kuma,

If you fancy a reasonably priced ebay purchase of Faze Action then try here:

Unforturnately, the record label no longer exists so it is getting a little harder to get hold of on vinyl.

Jason!

Thanks for the link!
I've ordered it.

Now, something completely mellow ( but better than Diana Krall Krap ) Smile

Alan,

Glad to hear that, thanks for letting me know. If you would like another Neil Young recommendation get "Live Rust" double LP which is both a great performance and live recording (sonic's are brilliant). It has a searing version of "Like a Hurricane".

Cheers,

New Year's Day Concert in Vienna, 1989...

Great fun! And for once typing while listening - shock horror!

Via my new Nait 5i (two hours of playing so far!}, which is a minor miracle considering it follows on from 52, Supercap, and 200. Nothing is perfect, and this is less perfect of course, but the important bits are there finely enough for me! Fine enough for Fredrik is indeed more than fine enough for me!

Anyone else got this?

Secret Machines - Now Here Is Nowhere

Described on Tower (and Amazon) as:

As their initial opus, "First Wave Intact," reveals, the trio--consisting of Josh Garza and brothers Brandon and Benjamin Curtis--deals largely in spacious guitar riffs, atmospheric keyboard lines, and precise rhythms, making lengthy tunes an ideal setting for their sound. Clearly, the group has a fondness for both early and latter-day Pink Floyd, but this is merely one musical touchstone for their sonic amalgam. "Sad and Lonely" moves to a dirty stomp that Marc Bolan would approve, while "The Leaves Are Gone" floats along on gentle vocals and dreamy melodies that recall Slowdive. With an expansive sound that incorporates everything from Beatlesque pop to avant-rock, the Secret Machines stand out among the bands of 2004 with NOW HERE IS NOWHERE.

Mojo (p.106) - 4 stars out of 5 - "[A] full-blown trip fit to bombard the hardiest synapses....For lovers of forward-thinking psychedelia anywhere, it's a blinder."

Uncut (p.95) - 4 stars out of 5 - "It's all about the riffs, which insistently seduce and bully you until you're leaping around your living room like a Kiss fan with a brain. Potent postmodern blues."

Curently not so sure...
Steve
