What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

Ciao Haim!
Padded cell is off for me.
I asked Adam to block my access, he did it, nobody hurts.

Leonard Cohen - The Future#45

Jean Wells Soul on Soul#46
Excellent soul compilation of a relative unknown

Waterboys - Room to Roam#47
Very under-rated album, Fisherman's Blues tends to get the nod from the "raggle taggle" period but this one is a much better album, it gels form start to finish.
Going through my collection one by one is an interesting exercise. If I was asked from the top of my head the 50 albums I could not live without I would not have immediately gone for this one but there it would undoubtedly have to be.

Wonderful album and a fantastic live band. Saw them redefine "loud" last January - outstanding!

Now:

Bob Geldolf - Great Songs of Indifference: the Anthology 1986-2001 A 4 CD set of all the solo work that goes to show that Geldolf is primarily a musician. Some of it is not easy listening but overall this is a set well worth having, and it is only £4.95 at Amazon at the moment - a real steal!

Saw him in Nottingham ages ago - he did one half with a kind of samba band and the second half under a bare 100w bulb doing Talking Heads stuff (including Psycho Killer). As you say absolute class, and one not to miss if you get the chance.

Now onto Sex Age and Death (sounds promising?) in the Geldolf 4cd set posted above. This strikes me as a must have set (which is probably a) why I've got it and b) why it is so cheap Smile) Good old Bob, tries to make the world better and everyone "loves" him for it : makes music and everyone ignores it!

Romica Puceanu & The Gore Brothers "Sounds From a Bygone Age - Vol. 2". She is a gipsy woman from Romania with a very good band, and this gipsy music is the real stuff (from the 60's)! Her vocal has been comared to Bille Holiday, and this is just fantastic, emotional stuff. Highly recommended if you like world music.
