What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

Eight Sacred Arias of Bach and Handel, sung by K Ferrier with Boult and the LPO on Decca, shortly.

Earlier were the First and Second Piano Concertos of Beethoven [Solomon], and the D Minor of Mozart [Fischer, as referenced in my Edwin Fischer Thread, currently on page 1 or 2 here - a miracle of a reading, actually].

It is always funny to me when I find an artist to whom I have been listening to on other recordings, has his or her own fine solo efforts. I have been enjoying Geoffrey Keezer's work with Christian McBride for some time, but had not heard this fine recording until a few days ago. Now, I will get his other CD's and smile with pleasure.

I've loved Trout Mask since I got it from a friend who really hated it (back in the 70's). It doesnt sound like much else but I dont think it is difficult once you find the entrance. In my ears it really rocks.

Still I always like to hold a clear spot for the Captain because he's as safe as milk and there's ice cream for crow, but it is not unconditionally guaranteed

BTW I'm listening to

You Know You're a Man, Bat Chain Puller and Owed T'Alex are wonderful.

I must give Trout Mask another try.

Finally got an FM connection to my NAT01.

BBC Radio 3 - Jazz Legends

A program about the Stan Getz/Eddie Sauter album Focus.

Just rocketed it's way to the top of my wish list.

Sloop,

This is without doubt an excellent album. Stan Getz is big favourite of mine, and this particular album is played a lot. Quite a different format for Stan, but a very complete work.

If you like this, you may also want to try Guitar Forms by Kenny Burrell, with
the orchestra being conducted and arranged by Gil Evans.

Regards

Nic

To be honest I often like this album. Sometimes it works, sometimes not...depending on the mood I'm in, I guess. The other Beefheart albums are easier to listen to, but I think "trout" is his best IMHO. I don't listen to it often, but it's getting better, better, better...

Best Regards

Good call Steve, my copy arrived today.
The price sadly gives an indication of the height of the esteem Geldof is held in musically. I had "deep in the heart of nowhere" on tape when it came out I remember not being too enamoured with Rupert Hynes production, I'll be interested to see what I think of it 20 years later.
