What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

Bach: Partita no.1
Dinu Lipatti on piano.
My very first Bach music I bought.

Fredrik,

Is this the disc you've recommended?

It's lovely. Atlho, it still hount me from my piano practicing days a little. Smile

After many piano concertos, this is a nice change of pace.

Good call Steve, my copy arrived today.
The price sadly gives an indication of the height of the esteem Geldof is held in musically. I had "deep in the heart of nowhere" on tape when it came out I remember not being too enamoured with Rupert Hynes production, I'll be interested to see what I think of it 20 years later.

I too only had "The Vegetarians Of Love" on tape, I remembered quite liking that so... I actually think I prefer Sex Age and Death, in places he goes a bit Cohen-ish. Not that keen on "Deep in the heart.." reading between the lines I think everyone was trying too hard in an attempt to "pay Bob back".

Haydn symphonies 94 and 96 performed by Hogwood. Especially the 94 here is really nice.

Schumann's Symphonic Etudes and Arabesque by Pollini on the piano. Together with Chopin, Schumann is my favourite composer for solo piano music.

The Black Album, Metallica. Japanese pressing.
Amazing sound quality, everything is so much easier to follow, when the music stops the background is dead quiet and starts with fast precision. More control and no unwanted noise floor.

Good mornining. I just woke up, and I am going to put the coffee on and get a Bach to feed the NAIM (it is too early for Beethoven).

How is the vacation going?

Haim

Now I'm listening to Sergei Rachmaninoff's reading of Schumann's Carnaval from 1926. This is definately the most exciting reading I've heard of this piece. It is from this 4 CD collection of historic Schumann recordings, and I can't think of a better Schumann starter kit if you can accept good historic sound. It comes in very nice packaging.
