What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

Hello Fredrik,

How do you consider this Mahler 5? Is the sound OK? I have only heard Bernstein's Mahler 5 with the VPO, but haven't really warmed up to it yet. Probably I will need to listen more to it.

Hi Rubio,

I'm no Mahler specialist, just love his symphonies...But when it comes to the 5th. I've heard Inbal (Brilliant Records) and Solti (Decca) and prefer this old recording. The sound is good! I've not heard Bernstein, so can't help you there.

CMJ The year in music 1980#51 some memories here

Rumor and Sigh#52

The first Richard Thompson album I bought.
One of my all time favourite artists, hadn't listened to this one in a while and it is very good.

He has the way that all the greats have of music and lyrics becoming greater than their individual parts.

A skull necklace like a high priestess"

I like this one, too!

Hi Fredrik!
Yes.
It's an album that after 27 years still gives a lot in terms of music and passion.
The print is very good as well!

Now is hard to find something to put on the table to follow!

Hi Gianluigi,

I think that most of the music on the ECM label are worth seeking out. Garbarek, early Metheny and so on...

Gian,

The pootch is good looking and must be very smart. He is trying to tell you that you have been confusing vacation with... industrial production (it was reported on The Wall Street Journal that Italy's GDP went up 2% from the day you started your royal vacation!!).

Dear Rubio and Fredrik,

I'm not convinced Bernstein's VPO Mahler 5 (as least this later one your discussing - the earlier DVD 5th is very much more approachable) is for all tastes. I haven't heard the Barbirolli but have seen it rated elsewhere. I'm more than a little fond of Rattle's Berlin account which is what hooked me to the work in the first place (though it could be argued that he plays the first two movements with such wonderful fire that there is not enough in the end). Mackerras with the RLPO offers a fine account, and one that builds brilliantly to the finish. Also worth noting are, I think, Abbado's later Berlin reading and Sinopoli with the Philharmonia.

regards, Tam
