What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

In the car: Charlie Haden, Egberto Gismonti / In Montreal, 1989 live recording during the Festival International de Jazz de Montreal.
At home: Villa Lobos / Alma Brasileira, Michael Tilson Thomas, New World Symphony, Renee Fleming.
Everytime I listen to this CD I replay at least three times Renne Fleming singing the Bachiana Brasileria No. 5, the music is so touching.

Nic - is that on LP or CD? I have a beloved old LP but it is showing signs of wear. Would be interested to know if available on CD.
Currently, Brahms 4 under Barbirolli - old Japanese vinyl, lovely.

Huw,
LP. Belongs to a mate of mine who's system has no turntable, and he asked me to transfer to CD for him. Found some second hand vinyl copies on the net ranging from £6-21 but all CD versions seem to be unavailable. Fine record, worthy of re-release

Thanks - it's a shame Mole Jazz is closing down and I won't be able to get there for the clearout sale. Ideally, I'll find both an LP and CD version.

Terfel/Sinopoli/Philharmonia doing Kindertotenlieder. I must say, having the Ferrier/Walter set, I'm usually dead against a man singing these, but this isn't bad at all.

I spent most of the weekend raking leaves. We have fourteen Oak trees in our yard as well as a few Maples and Hawthorns, and it takes five full days to clear all the leaves.
When I went inside, at sundown, hardly standing, I decided to find some music that reflected my activity in the very fresh air. So I brewed myself a large Mug of Turkish coffee and sat to listen to:
Towards the Wind / Stephan Micus
To the Winter Sun / Bruce Stark
I am still hopping that Stephan's wind will blow some of the stuff away, so my next weekend could become less hectic.
May your Fall be leafless,
Haim

Bantock - Hebridean Symphony (CD arrived in post today). This disc has tremendous dynamic range and the music is very British. Should give most rigs a good work out - highly reccommended.

'India' on John Coltrane's, 'Impressions', with Eric Dolphy on bass clarinet. Recorded 1962. Stunning. Not an original though, but a 70's reissue (thin-ish record in full gatefold sleeve).
