What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

Good morning, Gian.

Finaly you will have a chance to catch your breath after those 24 days of rebuilding the Italian nation.

Bernstein's Mahler symphony no. 7 with VPO. He has a beautiful account of this work, but I still prefer Abbado's brisker and more exciting performance with the CSO.

Bernstein's Mahler symphony 6 with VPO from that same set. It's also a very fine account, but I generally prefer the Karajan recording with BPO. Especially Karajans andante is very beautiful, and overall it sounds very right to me. However for me Bernstein beats Karajan in the finale which is more powerful, dynamic and tragic.

Interesting, Huw...

Have tried in the shop and put it back to the shelf, being uninspired. Maybe, I should re-listen...

cheers

Stefan,
I think this is her easiest disc to "get," but it is all a matter of taste. Certainly, it sounds better at home than in the shop. I like the mixture of French-Algerian and Southern Spanish that occurs on a couple of tracks. I picked it up with a bonus DVD with a documentary and that is also quite interesting. It is perhaps a tad mainstream, but that should not be a deterent.

Moving on to Solveig Slettahjell - would love to see her live.

And then rounding off Bernstein's Mahler box set with symphony no 5. I must admit that I have not really warmed up to no. 5. It is harder to get into for me. On the other hand, I really like no. 6 and no. 7 Smile.

Some gentle Sunday evening listening with Pascal Roge tinkoing the ivories on disc one of two Debussy Piano Works on Decca

Followed by disc two of the Wailers Catch a Fire double disc - the first is original mix from ja, the second being the album released for UK consumption after Blackwell had tinkered with it.
