What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

I love India, have you got the '62 (I think) Village Vanguard sessions (well worth having)?

Currently listening to Idomeneo with Mackerras/WNO as part of Radio 3's celebration of his 80th Birthday.

regards, Tam

Did you enjoy the show last night? How does he play so fast on Touch Wood - playing tunes with both hands and banging the guitar too - amazing to watch, as well as hear.

Off to play Talking Heads '77'. 28 years old and still brilliant.

Anouar Brahem - Le pat du chat noir.

I waited long before I tried this (for me) very important recording of one of the two greatest Oud players, because I was afraid the new speakers would not be able to weave the sound pattern which is SO important to bring this music under your skin. How wrong I was ! Goose pimples everywhere.

Before: Stefano Bollani - Smat Smat. Another proof that I've made the right decision: Crisp, clear piano lines without even a trace of smearing in the lower registers. Sensational !

Patterson Hood - Killers & Stars. A very personal album recorded over two evenings in the dining room of his house with just an acoustic guitar and a tape machine. Wasn't intended for regular release, but somehow it's here.

Ben Harper - Live from Mars

Baron von Tollbooth and the Chrome Nun by David Freiberg, Paul Kantner and Grace Slick (a.k.a Jefferson Airplane or Starship) - I'd forgotten just what a great album this was.

Stefan,

Something must be very wrong with your speakers if they give you 'Goose pimples'. You get pimples usually from a bright sound, poor imaging and limited dynamics. Goose bumps, on the other hand, are known to be affiliated with Martin Logans...

Thanks to you, I am listening to : Aguirre / Los Otros, Hille Perl

Facinating music!

So, it's goose bumps, then Winker

Glad (but not astonished) that you like Hille Perl. There's quite a lot of that kind of stuff around from her. She teaches in Germany and is good in finding these undiscovered ancient pieces of music.

If the music is making the hairs on your arms stand up you are sitting too close to the electrostatics Cool

Monk and Coltrane at Carnegie Hall, if the second set doesn't get your feet tapping you have no soul Eek

Well, since my feet were tapping - it progressed to the Allman Brothers Filmore Concerts and is currently Percy Plant with Mighty Rearranger.

"Born to Run" from the new 3 disc set. Sounds wonderful.

Hangman's Beautiful Daughter (original vinyl version) by the Incredible String Band. Not as good as 5000 Spirits (IMHO), but great nonetheless.

Feeling my age..

School, Supertramp.

When they were good, they were oh soooo good.

Rounding off the evening with Cowboy Junkies "Trinity Sessions," God is in his heaven and all is well with the world.

John Coltrane - Crescent - one of his best from 1964, pre Love Supreme. Fabulous ballads and blues.
Posted on: 17 November 2005 by Huwge
Disc 1 - Love and Affection, Joan Armatrading Classics (1975-1983) "Willow" - marvellous.

Previously and much less impressive to my ears, the new Vashti Bunyan - doesn't seem to be worth the hype.

Next up, Coltrane at the Half Note (just to say - awesome!)

New Order - Technique. OK on 1st play. Not sure what people find so exceptional about them.
Ocean Colour Scene - Marchin' Already OK MOR rock.
