What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

Liberation Music Orchestra - Not in our name. Just playing some old favourites in anticipation of a visit from the Cymbiosis Kid on Thursday. Better start spinning some vinyl before the missus gets home.

Excellent record - must listen to my copy again.
Yes it is. I haven't listened to it in quite a while. It really sounded good. I forgot just how good it is. What a great collection of songs. It has inspired me to listen to all six of their studio albums.

Larry

Casals & Serkin

Really ?
Casals led me to the Bach suites, years ago, but after him, I heard others that I liked at least as much as his interpretation. Can't talk about his Beethoven, but I absolutely LOVE the Schiff / Perenyi recording.

Stefan,
I first heard the Casals 30+ years ago at one of the first school music lessons that I can remember. His Bach and Beethoven have been benchmarks ever since. The Schiff disc is excellent but there is an emotionality and intelligence in the Casals / Serkin pairing that has not yet been attained by the more modern pairing. That said, I am not parting with the Schiff disc either.

Worth a try for me, Huw...
BTW: The new Stanko CD (which I'm still listenign to with great joy) for my taste is the best out of the three with the quartet.
cheers

Stefan,
My Stanko is on itw way from JPC. I hope it arrives in two days so I can have some new music for the road. We are taking a small trip (3500 KMs) to drive Tal to her college in Boston.
That is roughly worth of 35 good CDs to listen to. I am in dire need of good musical suggetions. Otherwise, I will have to listen to the wife all the way (no mute button).
Regards,
Haim

I'm warming up to the Bruckner 5 with OPO under Blomstedt later this month with an amazing performance by Jochum and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. Highly recommended, and it also includes symphony no. 4 and symphony no. 6.

Posted on: 30 August 2006 by Rubio
And in the same concert with Blomstedt there will also be Mozart symphony no. 34, and for Mozart symphonies my preferred conductor is Mackerras!
