What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

Mary Chapin Carpenter-Between Here And Now
Hi Matt
A Mary Chapin Carpenter album that I haven't heard. Would you recommend it?
I've got her first five albums, but lost track after that - not sure why, as I used to buy them as they were released. Come On Come On is my favourite album by her and This Shirt on State of the Heart my favourite track by Mary.
Thanks, Rotf

Funny, ROTF, I've been playing "On the threshold of dream" today, too.

Hi ROTF,
I do not know where you left off exactly but Between Here And Gone came out in 2004. I braincramped the name in my original post. Time*Sex*Love came out in 2001. They are both more introspective in the singer/songwriter vein than her earlier albums. I like them both alot. Prior to that her previous album was A Place In World in 96 or 97. Not bad either. Also, the Party Doll And Other Favorites collection came out around 2000. It has most of the well known songs as well as a couple of alternate takes and a couple of live tracks. Depends on how completist you want to be.
You may also want to check out the Jubilee:Live At Wolftrap concert. It came out originally on VHS in about 96 and is now on dvd. Really good show. Maybe you can find an inexpensive copy floating about.
Regards
Matt

"Modern Times" Bob Dylan. Had it on continuously all day. Utterly wonderful stuff. A touch of J.J. Cale about it too, which can only enhance it for me.

Just opened my copy and am about to put it on. I am looking forward to it based on the reviews I have heard.

Thank you Matt
I'm glad to hear she is still producing great albums - I'll definitely give Between Here And Gone and Time*Sex*Love a go. I'll also look out for the concert tape - I have seen her live a couple of times and they were truly great shows.
All the best Rotf

Tough call. Personally I like then all in differing degrees. 14 Songs is great for the most part while Eventually has its moments. Actually Eventually has grown on me over the years. Suicane is good but it almost seems like he is trying too hard to create a commercially sucessful album at times.
After retreating to his basement to record, the albums take on a looser, rougher tone I get into. All good with Come Feel Me Tremble and Mono (OK Grandpaboy strictly speaking) being my favorites with Folker a close second.
Push come to shove I would opt for 14 Songs from his early solo days and Come Feel Me Tremble from the latter recordings. Depending on the day it could go either day. I had the chance to see him at the Tralf in Buffalo a couple of summers ago on his solo tour. It was great, but to see him with a backing band would be something to behold I am sure.
