What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

Arctic Monkeys. Jnr left it lying around. OK modern sub-punky R&R. Every day observational lyrics. Good fun spotting the musical influences(ie the stolen riffs). 7/10 good 1st effort. Home made record apparently.

An excellent record, only recently discovered here. Tomasz Stanko has been doing the honours this morning.

Nigel,
You have prompted me to put Litania music of Krzysztof Komeda on. Prior to that it was Santana Abraxas, one of those records that I played to death in my youth. You forget sometimes how good a record is.

No, I don't (bad boy?). I do not think this CD is available in the US. Why don't they have Israeli songs? Do they think we do not sing?
Now something very special for you and your Logans. You will be thanking me for ever!
http://www.a1books.com/cgi-bin/mktSearch?act=showDesc&c...le&ISBN=075678306921
From the CD notes:
The composer calls his saxophone project SAX PAX, underlining that in this case the saxophones are not to be linked with military bands for which the instruments originally had been intended, but are used exclusively for peacefull purposes.
All the pieces are part of series the composer calls ZAJAZ, jazz in two directions, like the Janus-head showing two faces. There is one looking backwards into the past, represented by classical technics of composing, and the other face turns toward the future which is characterized by a new kind of combinig old and new elements of music.
Just get it, Stefan, no excuses, please!
Haim
PS
I think Louis Hardin (Moondog) passed away couple years ago.
cheers

Sunday morning.
Beethoven Piano Sonatas (Appadsionata, Pathetique, Moonlight & Les Adieux), Ivan Moravec, piano.
My favorite piano player in magnificent recordings from 1962-1970.

Greg Brown - Covenant. Well into the groove now.
BTW Tam some 803's on ebay with Buy It now £999 if you are interested, I know you are a B&W fan. I'm skint, but they seem a bit of a bargain.

The flute, live. I have been raking leaves all day (again, what else is there to do on a Sunday?), and I just came in for a glass of water.
For the last two hours someone has been playing the flute outdoors. Luckily none of my neighbours is running a tractor or a leaf blower so I can really enjoy the music which is on the soft side and uneven a bit. I might go and investigate.

Thanks for the heads up nic, but I'm happy with my 804s. Also, given they retail for around 3.5k a buy it now price of 999 strikes me as a little bit suspicious, especially with such little usage.

Charles Lloyd / Billy Higgins - Which Way Is East
Stunning artifact of the last cooperation of these great musicians before Higgins had to go. Far from being an audiophile recording, but telling SO many stories.

Metallica - black album
Heather Nova - Redbird
Babel Gilberto - Basically her whole backcat.
I just cannot seem to listen to anything else this week. Metallica's black album seems to be permenantly on play both on the ipod and at home has been for ages.
Oh I also tried System of a Down again - I do find them a little too difficult to listen to.
