What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

More Mozart. I bought this box set of the complete Mozart symphonies performed by Mackerras yesterday. I have just listened to symphony no. 34, 35 and 36, because I'm going to a performance of no. 34 and Bruckner no. 5 on Thursday with Oslo Philharmonic and Blomstedt. I cannot imagine a better Mozart symphony set than Mackerras'. At least if you prefer your Mozart tight and exciting. I think Mackerras style suits Mozart's music perfectly!

Dear Rubio,
Very glad to see you enjoying the set. The early works in there are a particular treat and put the lie to the notion that below number 30 or so there's not much botheriing with.
regards, Tam

Green River = Creedence Clearwater Revival
IMO, the best rock outfit ever to emerge from the USA. Green River on 45 r.p.m remaster sounds as good as ever. I think the 45 r.p.m os a bit of a gimmick, but when music is this good who cares?

Dear Tam,
Yes, I picked up this recommendation here

Now just finished listening to some latin music, Aterciopelados "Caribe Atomico". Good stuff.

Yes, I picked up this recommendation here. I tend to like Mackerras in almost everything he has done, and so he is the greatest living conductor to me.
Couldn't have put it better myself.

p.s. since you mentioned Mozart piano concertos earlier, you might like to try the Brendel/Mackerras/SCO discs - there are four in all 9&25, 22&27, 20&24 and my personal favourite 12&17.

The King - Gravelands
"The ghost Elvis Presley is alive and well in the guise of James Brown (not that James Brown of course!), a Belfast postman who has redubbed himself "The King." Elvis was known for taking other's songs and making them his and making them hits, but people have long wondered what song he would have tackled if he were alive today. In Gravelands we get the Elvis treatment on such classics as Jimmy Hendrix's "Voodoo Child," Bob Marley's "No Woman, No Cry," AC/DC's "Whole Lotta Rosie," and Motown/Stax standards "I Heard It Through the Grapevine," and "Dock Of The Bay." Have a listen to The King take on Nirvana's "Come As You Are" here."
