What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

Having recently bought this myself, following many forum quotes singing its praise, I fully agree. Excellent record, which I can see becoming a firm favourite, especially River Man which is mesmerising.

Regards

Nic

Linda Ronstadt & Ann Savoy - Adieu False Heart

"Cajun-flavoured acoustic folk gems. On Adieu False Heart, Linda Ronstadt teams up with Cajun historian and singer Ann Savoy to explore the rich pastures of American folk music.

There are some wonderful regional touches, such as the Creole two-step Plus Tu Tournes, but their journey takes them far beyond the music of the Louisiana bayou to include the Kentucky bluegrass of Bill Monroe, songs from the 1950s American folk revival such as John Jacob Niles' Go Away From My Window and even a brace of timeless classics from the pen of Richard Thompson.

The arrangements are all acoustic, full of antique dulcimers, fiddles and mandolins and stripped of artifice or unnecessary adornment, while their contrasting voices give their harmonies bite along with sweetness. If you love the McGarrigle Sisters, you're simply going to adore this. - HMV Choice"

Side one and two De Dannann - The Star Spangled Molly (not the best cover either!)

A homage to the immigrant music of the 1920's in America.

De Dannann are a trad Massive Attack having had Dolores Keane, Mary Balck and on this album Maura O'Connell in their line-up.

Side one ends with a version of Hey Jude that shouldn't really work but somehow does.

great craic

Messiaen / Quator pour la fin du temps / Ensemble Walter Boeykens / Harmonia mundi

The 'Quartet for the End of Time' was written by Olivier Messaien in 1940 while being a prisoner of war in an internment camp in Silesia. The unusual combination of instruments, violin, clarinet, cello and piano was dictated by the musicians available in the camp.

The work was first performed with broken instruments in January 1941 before 5000 prisoners in the Stalag buried under snow.
"Etienne Pasquier's cello had only three strings, the keys of my piano went down but did not come up again".

Created and performed under trying circumstances, the eight movements Quartet remains a powerful masterpiece.
