What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

Lux Feminae - after a long weekend with a couple of nice blokes, there has to be some "female light":
Before: The super lovely "Ninna Nanna", written by Arvo Pärt, sung by Figueras, too. Yummie !
cheers
Stefan

Catching up on some recent vinyl arrivals:
Christine Collister - Love. Definitely worth the duplication, much better than CD
Canteloube's Chants d'Auvergne, Natania Davrath on Quiex 200g vinyl. Have to be honest, doesn't seem to sound as good as the original pressing that I have, but much less surface noise across the 4 sides. Need to A / B when I have more time to determine whether this is really true.
Finally, Midnight Blue - Classic Records pressing. This could be expensive.

Bought this box set today (very, very cheap) and been listening to a couple of the symphonies. Sounds great (dramatic music)!
Best Regards

Huw,
I always knew you were a man of taste, have you got many Kenny Burrell records? I could recommend a few others if you are interested.

Nic, yes I have a couple. I just wanted to see whether the Classic records pressing were really worth €37.50 a pop. Sadly for my wallet, yes.
Haim,
Solo Monk is excellent, but I prefer his solo Riverside sides - Thelonious himself & Alone in San Francisco

The Hotel Child - Ingrid Lucia and the Flying Neutrinos.
A new artist to me, but excellently recorded, nice late night jazz.

E.S.T. - Tuesday Wonderland. Hmm - need to listen to this a bit more. Will be interesting to see how it translates into a live set, have to wait 'til November for that.
Gabriela y Rodrigo - eponymous - great to listen to whilst doing the ironing. Big fun!
Currently Peter Gabriel - So. A great pop album.

Beethoven's symphonies no. 4 and no .7 conducted by the mighty Furtwangler in 1943 with the Berlin PO. Powerful stuff!
. It is from a set containing all the Beethoven wartime symphonies by Furtwangler.

Metallica- Load
This is the CD that first got me into metallica. It's amazing how many changes a band goes through.

Dear Rubio,
Furtwangler's wartime recordings with the VPO are amongst the finest he ever made. It was a tragedy that the tapes made their way back to Moscow and only really saw the light of day recently.
DG has two boxes of all these recordings. I have the first and as well as the Beethoven symphonies is also includes extraordinary readings of the violin concerto and the Schubert great C major symphony.
regards, Tam
