What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

Sibelius Seven. Philharmonia, Boult, live at the RFH on 8th March 1963, [when I was a mere 14 months old]. BBC Legends. By a huge gulf the most satifying, serious, and totally absorbing performance of this symphony, well loved by me, that I have ever found. Not to be missed, in the same way the Eugen Jochum's Haydn Symphony performances are both so satifying, and yet so unnexpectedly so.

Please don't miss the chance to buy this if you have ten punds spare...

And another masterpiece from the electronic golden era.

Haim, you're right. Oud, Zieharmonika and piano are a great combination.

I guess (and hope) I have most recordings, Brahem is a part of (7), because he's such a special musician...

cheers

McIntyre, Treadmore and Davitt

They were the half back line from Barnstoneworth United - which was a ripping yarn.

Although this is on the album, the b-side is not, so it is an essential purchase or you miss out on the superb Ordinary to Enschede. I always thought it sad when Enschede lost to Borussia Mönchengladbach in the 1975 UEFA cup final.

Earlier the Schubert mass (D 950) with the Giulini, the Philharmonia and the Edinburgh festival chorus in their prime. Over the weekend I gave the Requiem a listen - anyone who appreciates this work should own at least one of the two Giulini accounts on BBC Legends (this one has better sound and better pairings, no applause to mark an interval, but the mono account does have a slight added fire).

Currently Mackerras and the Philharmonia playing Beethoven 9 from the Edinburgh festival on Radio 3 - but of course [smiley].
