What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

Berro - Ao vivo: A low-fi CD with live music that I was listening to when I stayed in Lisbon (couple of years ago), and stranded in one of these "semi-private" places that you would never find again. The place opened at 2am (right after dinner); the concert started 3am, and went right into the morning. Another thing I remember: I had stopped smoking, three weeks earlier. What a bad timing !!!

The guy's name that led me there was Nuno...

Obrigado

Wife Making Noises in Kitchen Winker. I only listen to music after dinner, roughly between 8 and 10 PM. No music at computer, no walkmans, discmans, CD-players, MP3 etcetera.

Have fun!

Kremerata Baltica (Gidon Kremer) - The Russian Seasons. Huw, you surely have this and shoudl like it. With your email, you inspired me to put it on, anyway. Not really summer music, but excellent music.

cheers

Yes - and up to Gidon Kremer's usual high standards. Quiet night here as system powered down pre-move.

Gave Joshua Redman's Momentum another listen - I like it better, but not as much as the SF Jazz collective CD.

Marq8,
would you care to extend a bit on MLW's mass ? I have her "Black Christ of the Andes", and like it quite a bit.

cheers

Mary Lou Williams - "Black Christ of the Andes". Great how this thread works...

MLW is one of the backbones in 20th century Jazz, unfortunately without the same lobby that carried Miles Davis, John Coltrane (not his widow, though...), etc. onto their place in the hall of fame.

What else can I say!
Highly recommended.

Lise de la Salle - JH Bach, Franz Liszt, solo piano works: Fresh approach without the urge to deliver "master pieces" or "totally new views" on her second recording. Which - OTOH - is a brave and respect-earning position in times where only the provoking interpretation "makes it" (or transparent clothes on the cover photo...)

cheers

Earlier: Joshua Redman - Momentum: Music of the 21st century ! Absolutely up to current musical standards !

Huw, if that SF Jazz collective stuff is better than "Momentum", you have convinced me momentarily to purchase - so to say.

cheers
Stefan

PS: Yipeeh ! 900th post ! Only 100 to go (until retirement...)

Currently systemless, so it's hard to say - personally, I preferred the SF Jazz Collective, but Momentum has been growing on me.

I am seriously considering an extra day off tomorrow to erect Fraim, but it seems to make little sense before the rest of the stuff arrives.

Last CD of the day was lise de la salle - as you say, a refreshing approach.

Huw,
lise de la salle will be in Germany for a few "gigs" (sounds strange to me with classical music), but more so in my region. If interested, check out Concerts I'll probably go to see her in Mainz (good place for classix, saw Anna Gourari, there.)

cheers

Radio 3's Beethoven fest now over, I'm actually using my cd player again. That said, not had a complete break from Beethoven, have been listening to Solti's symphony cycle in Chicago. It's okay, but so far only the 5th has really stood out.

Last night it was A Momentary Lapse of Reason by Pink Floyd (after PB reminded me just how good sorrow sounds).

Currently listening to Astronauts and Heretics by Thomas Dolby.

I'm currently listening to (although not watching) the 5.1 mix of Beck's 'Guero' album in my A/V system. Other than the fact that my head is too near one rear channel speaker whilst I sit at my PC, it's a lot of fun, and gives some space to what is a fairly densely layered recording.
