What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

This Leaden Pall

This is the one with Running Order Squabble Fest - the song that featured the line You're going on after Crispy Ambulance

Alquin also gets a mention in Doreen

It's the year 2163
Chester Barnes has risen from the dead
And he's coming round to creosote the fence
And I for one feel spartan and monastic

As the drama unfolds on the lawn
There's a wager between the staff and me
That Barnsey can't complete the job before
I take my final Stannah up the stairs, to the stars

Barbirolli conducting the Halle in the first disc of his Sibelius cycle - so far so stunning. The disc is made up of 'fillers' such as Finlandia, Karelia and Pohjala's daughter in a way that I honestly expected not to work very well. Thankfully I was wrong, I now see why Fredrik recommends this set.

Also contains the great 4ad3dcd and Improv Workshop Mimeshow Gobshite.

My first HMHB purchase after hearing them on John Peel.

Bach Book One of the Well Tempered Clavier. H Walcha on the late DG recording. Always a comfort, and the more so with time...

Stefano Bollani Quintet - I Visionari; this has been growing on me. Took a while, but now I really like it

Mahler symphony no. 2 by Bertini. This version sounds very good to me, but I don't have many other versions to compare it to (I owe Tennstedt's no. 2 as well, but haven't heard it yet).

Bertini's cycle certainly is among the top contenders; and it's hard to beat due to it's price and the good sonics!

An obscure group that put out 2 albums from Nashville The Amazing Rhythm Aces 'Too Stuffed to Jump', and now ZZ Top 'Tejas'. Probably some Allman Bros next now that I've set this vibe going in the room.

Last night was Esa-pekka Salonen's Wing on Wing. Quite the opposite vibe.

A wonderful disc from Runnicles and the Atlanta symphony, and one of the finest Wagnerian sopranos around - Christine Brewer. The Prelude and Liebstod from Tristan, followed by Strauss's Tod und Verklarung then Four Last Songs (the last of which are especially fine).

My only reservation (and a very surprising one, given Telarc's usual standards) is that I don't think the micing of Ms Brewer is quite right - a touch too much sibilance. Still thoroughly recommended though. Can't wait for their full Tristan (with the BBC Symphony) due next week on Warner.
