What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

I THOUGHT it must be good - our C-level coming over from SFO likes toi stay in it. Personally, I wouldn't recommend it, any more. Many nicer places for half the cash in Düsseldorf. Plans to go / come ?

First, Mozart's piano concertos no. 20 and no. 24 with Alfred Brendel conducted by Charles Mackerras. It's a really nice recording! Thank you, Tam, for this recommendation! :-)

Then, Kristin Asbjørnsen with "Wayfaring Stranger - A Spiritual Songbook". This CD consists of 11 afro-american spirituals from the days of slavery.

At last, Mountain Goats "Get Lonely". I really like this lo-fi band, and the lyrics are really something.

Anonymous 4 / Hildegard Von Bingen / 11,000 Virgins / Harmonia Mundi

Inspired by the legend of St. Ursula and the Eleven Thousand Virgins, sung by the nuns of her convent.

Magnificent chants still sounding fresh and new this morning, after 900 hundred years in existence.

Good morning,

Haim

I felt like listening again to KV 423, a duo for violin and viola in G which I heard in concert last weekend.

The Grumiaux Trio is playing it much more vividly, probably something that has to do with the old age of the viola player last Sunday.

Vaughan Williams' Sea Symphony from Tod (Vernon) Handley and the RLPO. Wonderful disc (I think I may be losing my Haitink cycle soon). Can be had as a single or disc or from HMV you can get the 7 disc cycle for just £14 - it's rude not to really.

regards, Tam

p.s. Does it strike anyone else as a little unfair that Handley has never been knighted?

There should be a thread - albums with "nn Songs" as their title - does it show a lack of imagination or a statement that they think their listeners cannot count? Smile

Some records were just made to cheer you up and sing a long to - thankfully Scott Walker released The Drift and Tilt - wonderful albums both.

You got this Steve, bought it awhile ago for about a tenner, now about £16, still good value. There is also a 10,000 maniacs box set for about same price

Some achingly beautiful compositions- especially his use of the cello and the lovely vocals of Lisa Hannigan. Must surely be time for him to release some more - please!

Ian

Edit: prompted by my own musings - it seems from his website that Damien's new album will be released in November. Smile

"Lontano" by the Stanko quartet.

Not easy to get "earthed" after seeing the fabulous "Das Parfüm" - based on the even more fabulous novel by Patrick Süsskind in the movie theatre.

Is that already out elsewhere in the world ? In the States ? Go and see it ! A rare example where the movie reaches out to the books quality.

cheers
