What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

after the Rubalcaba series - finalized with the great latest "solo" album, started a Dino Saluzzi series, now. "Once upon a time" just finished, now "Rios"

As recommended by J.N. And excellent on first listen (it has to be said, more John Martyn than Nick Drake in influence...)

Enjoy it if you get opportunity,
James

Ian Brown - Music of the Spheres

On clear vinyl: David Bowie live at Santa Monica, recorded for FM Radio in 1972. Have been looking for this for a while, having enjoyed the track (Waiting for the Man) that was included on the Almost Famous soundtrack. Definitely worth the wait, even if it is a warts and all recording with sound checking on the fly. It pays to just grin and bear it through the opening tracks of side 1, but then Mick Ronson's guitar just leeps out. This is less a Bowie album and more a tribute to the raw power and aggression that Ronson brought to the mix and that was not truly represented in the studio.

Frank Zappa - Hot Rats CD. Sorry I can't get this album. Played it twice and it just sort of grates after a few tracks. I will persevere though.
Fleetwood Mac - Tango in the Night LP
R.E.M. - Document CD.

Stefan,

Stimulated by the cover art to believe that 'tok tok tok' might be interesting and a bit of googling later it seems I was right Winker

They seem to have a number of CDs dating back some years. Is 'love again' one you would recommend starting with or should I punge in somewhere else ??

Thanks

They're playing in my town, next week, and I'm contemplating whether I should go or not

I'd recommend "ruby soul", actually, I'm listening to it, now:

If you like voice, sax, fender rhodes and acc bass, this is for you...

cheers
