What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

I played this last night also...bloody good album.

I'll tell you a funny story and I swear this is true - some years ago an old workmate of mine picked up a pirate copy of this album on cassette from some dodgy foreign market and on the insert, track 4 was listed as "Scenes from an Indian restaurant"!! ( should be Italian restaurant for those not familiar with it)

Regards

Gary

Wow, that takes me back. That crazy violinist - always an entertainer. Is that the album with Tired of Waiting on it or Uranian Circus? Both albums are unique.

Inspired by James (JWM), I bought

This is excellent - great guitar without going OTT, Lyrics are simple, but it works.

'Lovelight' - Fooking brilliant............. A bit of Josh Wink's higher state of conciousness, dance, horns, funky, classic piano lines. Pure dance, pure pop. Great vocal.

Genius

Listen without predudice

Can't remember who recommended this to me - must have been Haim. Or Huw ? Or Adrian ? No, it must have been Haim.

Whoever it was: Thanks !

Beethoven symphony no. 1 and no. 3 "Eroica" from the Harnoncourt set with the COE. They sound excellent to me.
Posted on: 10 October 2006 by Tam
I must say, I've never got on terribly well with the Harnoncourt set, but then I've never got on that well with most of his recordings I've heard (his Haydn Paris symphonies particularly rubbed me the wrong way - he seemed to go against the grain of the music, is the best way I can think to put it). Compared to the ceasless surprise and invention of, say, the Mackerras set he is rather dull. Next to the wonderful textures that Davis and his Dresdeners bring it also falls flat. Indeed, I think I may clear the set out as part of my spring cleaning.

Interestingly, though, I very much enjoyed his concerti with Aimard. Then again, I also enjoyed the Brendel/Rattle (and I disliked Rattle's symphonies even more strongly).

Bishopla,

How did you find this album? All the joking and talking on stage were distracting me away from the music. I like much better their 'Uncommon Ritual'. Do you have it?

Regards,

Haim

Haim,

I do agree they could have left out the talking and such. I am a big fan of Bela Fleck however and do like the music. I do not have "Uncommon Ritual". I will order tonight. Thanks,

Schubert - Symphony No.8, in B Minor ("Unfinished")

Wilhelm Furtwangler Conducting the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra

Just received this today on Vinyl. Not sure of the date, it's got to be 30 years old but in excellent condition. The label is "His Master's Voice" RCA Victor

I had not listened to this gem in many years. It is advertised as what Mr. Jarraeu would have sounded like if he had done straight ahead jazz instead of being a hybrid of pop and jazz. This is a superb album but recorded on noisy vinyl.
