What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

Haim,

I have now heard "Conte De L'incroyable Amour" and "Barzakh". I preferred the former; mostly due to the use of clarinet in addition to the oud. I will also borrow "Astrakhan Cafe" and "Thimar" from my local library before I decide which one(s) to buy.

They also have the Messiaen "Quartet for the End of Time" both by Myung-Whun Chung and the Harmonia Mundi one at the library. Which one do you think is the best?

Best regards
Espen

Mick Hanly - Still not cured

Mich Hanly excellent Irish songwriter and singer. Was lead singer with Moving Hearts after Christy Moore left. "Without the fanfare" which Mary Black covered is on this album. Sadly he's relatively unknown.

I'm delving into the Beethoven symphonies at the moment, an area I haven't really discovered yet. Today, I have been listening to the symphonies no. 2 and no. 5 by Harnoncourt and the COE. The music sounds lovely to me.

I have the Furtwangler wartime set and the Mackerras set on the shelf to compare with soon (+ some single discs with Walter, Klemperer, E. Kleiber and C. Kleiber). From what I have read I expect them to be even better.

Needs a second listen - lots of breathing on this. Sonatas more appealing to me than concertos.

cheers

Never had the opportunity - though I do remember buying Seconds Out on cassette when I was a lad. There is a rumoured reunion in the offing - including PG, I'll await that with some interest and trepidation at the potential ticket prices.

"The Buzz: Genesis Reunion Imminent?
There's been a growing amount of chatter this week about a possible reunion of Genesis. The band has officially been on hiatus since 1998. Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel, both former lead vocalists for the popular progressive rock group, are both talking about the possibility that the band may reunite sooner rather than later.

Gabriel, a founding member of the band who left in 1975 to pursue a solo career, tells Rolling Stone that "The odds are better now than before. We're going to have the conversation." Collins, the band's drummer who replaced Gabriel as lead vocalist tells the Reuters news service, "If it happens, I'll be there," playing drums and leaving the lead vocals to Gabriel. Guitarist Steve Hackett told the Chicago Sun-Times that he has been contacted by Genesis management and says, "I do think it will happen."

If it does happen, it'll be the first time Genesis has performed together since recording a new version of "The Carpet Crawlers" for a 1999 greatest hits compilation. The last time Gabriel performed with the group was in a one-time-only concert in 1982. " That was late 2005.

Inexplicably this great album was only added to my other 20 year old Joni LPs 6 months ago. Slow on the uptake Roll Eyes

Giulini condcuting Verdi's Don Carlos live from the Royal Opera House in 1958 (on their new own label).

Wonderful, wonderful stuff (one of the most involving discs I've bought in a long while). I'll write a proper thread about this in due course but, for the moment no one for fans of Verdi, Giulini or opera in general to be without.

regards, Tam
