What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

An old favourite, The Pogues "If I Should Fall From Grace with God" (even if Rum, Sodomy and the Lash is my favourite). Many wild parties was accompanied by this one
.

Half Speed Mastered on 180g vinyl - don't know what that actually means other than only a few tracks per side and superb sound quality. AK's voice is incredible.
Warming the phono stage amp before opening the biscuit tin!

PS Thanks for the compliments, remind me to send some REAL nice ones...
Stefan, good morning.
When I have a choice I go with a non-hybrid. I do not think that the extra layer not being used by the cdp can add anything (good) to the music.
Send me the REAL stuff. I love watching it.

I have wanted to read one of his books for a while, but I wonder if I should start with "My Name Is Red", "Snow" or "The White Castle". Which one would you recommend for a Pamuk beginner?
Best regards
Espen
Espen,
I have not read 'The White Castle'. Pamuk's books are not easy to read, to put it mildly. 'Snow' is a a contemporary political story while 'My name is Red' (which is much longer and more complicated) takes place some 500 years ago and deals with culture and art in the Islamic world of the Ottoman empire.
So, Espen, if you have the urge to plunge into something very new, deep and very rich, go with:

the kind of cd i'm searching maybe isn't the "classic" marching band sousa sound but marching bands playing well known songs. i. e. a few days here in vienna i saw a brass band playing abba songs which sounded great. do you know something like this?
still have to look at the web sites with the detailed information and would love to see such a marching band life.![]()

Dear Ian,
I saw you posting on the main menu, and I knew it would be Mozart - well I had that gut feeling! Have a look out for those Edwin Fischer performances on Apian. If you struggle to find them then send me an email. They are spendid and a contrast to anything else in a manner. The three CD issues are lower mid-price, and the transfers, exemplary.
I am listening to a handfull of Beethoven Piano Sonatas at the moment from various great pianists. In fact I shall post about them in depth tomorrow!

That was a scarry moment. I thought I had been sacked as I could not login! I don't know why I had to log in again, and then get told no such person exists or whatever!
Probably another ghastly spelling mistake, I expect.
Dear Ian,
The Missa Solemnis must be one of the toughest pieces in all the classical repertoire. I loved parts for twenty years before I really got a grip on the whole thing! That took going to a remarkable performance of it in Hereford Cathedral quite a few years ago now, where it was given in memory of the late Bishop John Of Hereford, who had died still in harness.
He was the last Bishop in the English Church to die in office for more than a century, and he was very well respected and loved in the See. The performance was greated as a requested in complete silence, and in fact no one moved for a good five minutes. I have never encountered a silence so deep since, and don't expect to again. The music has been a true favourite of mine ever since. All the performers in Hereford that time surpassed themselves. In fact the details of the performance were completely lost in the profound memory of the significance of the event.
Kindest regards from Fredrik
PS Thanks for the link for people above as well.
